Hello

Any recommendations for Automatic Car lessons (beginner) for Dublin (South County).

Thanks in advance !

Is it that you can't drive and only want lessons for an automatic or that you can already drive a manual and want to drive an automatic?

Cause if you can drive a manual, an automatic is pretty easy.

And if you cant drive at all, you'd be better off learning to drive a manual first and then drive an automatic because in the long run automatics are more difficult to source and therefore more expensive in this country.

of course if you are 70 and can afford to buy only new cars...surely any ordinary motor school could help?

First time driver and only want to learn in an automatic, aware of the limitations/issues of this.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Afraid I don't have any tips about driving instructors. However I'm sure Irish School of Motoring http://www.ism.ie/ will be able to point you in the right direction.

I drive an automatic and think they are great. If 200m american drivers swear by them they can't be wrong! Don't bother listening to fuddy duddy views about automatics by irish drivers (e.g., see above post) who as you can see from their driving on the road most of them don't have a clue how to drive safely.

A similar number of Americans :

  • Describe what's sold in McDonald's and Burger King as food
  • Regularly eat what's sold by McDonald's and Burger King
  • Are obese
  • Claim they voted for Obamalama Ding Dong (a man who doesn't know how many Americans preceded him as President)
  • May elect Sarah Palin as President
  • Elected Bush et Fils as Presidents
  • etc.
Based on the quality of their recommendations and preferences, I'll continue with manual transmissions thanks. :)

Presume you were talking about my post- what exactly is 'fuddy duddy' about it?

As it happens I drive an automatic too at the moment, but I learnt to drive a manual. So if I need to change my car I will not be limited, I can drive my husband's car when necessary, I can drive a hire car when abroad etc etc.

Exactly, if you do your test in an automatic then you cannot legally drive manual cars.

Quite easy to hire an automatic car when abroad. In fact, it's difficult enough in certain countries to hire a manual.

OP, Any driving school should be able to accomodate you. If you feel more comfortable driving and automatic then that's what you should do.

I agree. But don't limit yourself on a whim. In the long run it would be easier if you learnt on a manual.

I'm teaching DD to drive our automatic (Octavia) at the moment and it definitely makes it easier for her — as a nervous beginner — to concentrate on mastering the basics of steering, use of mirrors, driving position, general road sense, etc.

But once she's built up a bit of confidence I will certainly advise her to do plenty of practice in a manual car and to sit her test in one.

I learnt to drive a tractor first, my father thought we couldnt do too much harm in a field on a tractor. Boy, was he wrong.

Still, you could always borrow one!;)
