Would any one have any idea how much I would be looking at to repalce a head gasket. 2001 VW Passat 160k miles. Is there any point ?
 
You will most likely need to get the head skimmed too.

Is the car in good nick otherwise?

Guessing you won't see 1000 go too far.
 
Is it petrol or diesel? Very unusual for gasket to blow in the diesel are you sure the gasket is blown? What symptoms are you getting? If its a petrol and the gasket is definitely gone with 160,000 on the engine it would probably be better to try and source a decent s/h engine.
