If one purchases a wii game from Amazon that costs €29 , will VAT be charged because it is over €18 ?

Amazon will charge you Irish vat. However, it will only be the difference between uk & irish, as the price you see will already contain uk vat.
There will be no nasty surprise when the postman turns up, as they ship from uk, not Jersey, so that is the end of your liability. The €18 doesn't come into it in this case.

No it was amazon.co.uk and it arrived this morning and my daughter saw what Santa was bringing - back to the online drawing board for me!

Amazon is great now that we can get free shipping on orders over 25 pounds. To save myself repeated trips to the sorting office - I've been getting the parcels delivered to work - it also means that the kids don't see the parcels as I can leave them in the car boot 'til the kids have gone to bed.

Firm believer in Amazon - however, be aware. I ordered 2 separate book deliveries two weeks ago - one was delivered fine, on time. But the second - it came in a bashed box, a week later, obviously opened and re-sealed with cheap sellotape - and one book was damaged. To be fair, Amazon have refunded for the damaged book and apologised for the late and damaged delivery, but I'm a bit suspicious now about stuff from Amazon being opened (maybe somebody along the delivery chain was looking for more valuable stuff than Celtic Mythology...). Just be cautious about the stuff you're ordering - don't order a really expensive piece of jewellery - I think there are gremlins in the supply chain checking for this at this time of the year.

Their service is generally excellent, never had a single problem with them.

Their delivery fees would be my only gripe with them.

now free to Ireland if you spend more than £25

I just placed an order for 93 pounds and im being charged for shipping to Ireland - how do you avail of the free shipping?

Edit - I realised you have to actually click on Free Super Saver Delivery to get it.

i'd ring them up to try and get them to change it to free shipping, they are supposed to be helpful enough, just say you thought that only applied to UK customers.

Opinions here:

How does shopping from Amazon.co.uk with delivery to an Irish address and paying Irish VAT fall on the patriotic/non-patriotic spectrum?

well you're contributing to the tax take while supporting a 'foreign' business' profits, so somewhere in the middle?
i sometimes find i get better value on some books at reads of nassau street, bought both James Ellroy's new book and the final book in the Stieg Larrsson trilogy cheaper there than they were at the time on Amazon - substantially so.

The latest Stieg Larrsson book is even cheaper in The Bookstop in Nutgrove or Stillorgan shopping centres.
