use of laser card in UK cash machines limited

I recently used my Irish bank laser card in a few banks in the UK and discovered that I can only withdraw a max of €150 even though I had approx €1,000 sitting in my account. In the past I have been able to withdraw up to £350 sterling easily as long as my account had the funds.

I rang the bank and they explained that I needed to use a UK bank which recognises my chip (this hasnt been an issue before and surely the UK bank recognises my chip if its allowing a £150 withdrawel). On trying to find a solution which would allow me to withdraw up to £400 I didnt get any clear answer and was told that the bank would take my feedback on board.

Just wondering if anyone has come across a similar situation. Its no big problem, the effect on me is that I will probably have to pay more bank charges for sterling witrhdrawel as I generally need more that £150 on trips to UK. I plan to write to the bank also and confirm my request.

Las summer i was in London...My permanent Tsb card wasnt working over there in any atm machine....The same card works in Amsterdam...Strange...

I regularly travel to the UK and never had such an issue , having said that I tend to use ATM's that are locted at High St banks rather than those in shopping centres , supermarkets , pubs etc..

The Post Office Machines are free to use - watch this in the UK - you can be charged up to £1 just to withdraw cash, never mind the exchange rate charges. They are also managed by Bank of Ireland who underwrite the Post Office Financial products. Perhaps these would be okay for what you need.

Why not change your money before you go?

Probably the hassle of walking/driving to the bank, waiting in the queue and because in 15yrs of travelling between Ireland and UK its never been an issue before.

Also in reply to another post, the banks I used were all high street.

Whenever you travel to an other county its better to have cash with you, better then trusting your ATM cards....You never know if they will be accepted or not...Even if they were accepted in the past

Which bank are you with and is the card purely a laser card?

I have noticed that UB laser cards no longer work in any ATM found in the motorway services in the UK. It worked fine in a real bank ATM.
