RSA - Lights on campaign during the day

The RSA have a radio campaign running to encourage people to leave their lights on during the day.

Obviously there are some cars which have this as a safety feature and overall I would say it is not a bad idea - BUT not for all cars.

I have a Renault & if I turn on my lights during the day, the backlight on my dash goes dim & I cannot see my speed, petrol gauge, time etc. Obviously my speedometer is the most critical. I reckon this makes it dangerous for me to drive with my lights on during the day unless the day is quite dark. Does anyone know is there a way to alter the light on the dashboard for a day/night setting? Don't have a manual!!

I'm a renault driver and have been for some time (19, coupe and now cabrio) and on all of the models that I have owned, there has been the option to increase/decrease the lights on the dash display. It's normally close to the dial which controls the height of your headlamps.

Thanks woolran - never noticed those 2 dials !!

Seems to definately improve the backlight, will be hard to say for definate until I drive on a brighter day. Thanks again!!

(I do agree it is a good idea once you can still see the dashboard!!)
 
They tried to introduce this a few years ago, and people were complaining that it was yet another example of the Nanny state!

Where will it all end? Next thing you know they'll be telling us we have to have a driving licence, and pay road tax, and insurance, and wear a seat belt. That's all very fine for that crowd up in Dublin, but we don't need all that stuff down here.
 
I find it incredible that having your lights on during the day in Ireland isn't mandatory. It is just about everywhere else in Europe. It's a little thing that saves lives and should be written into law IMHO.
 
people driving on dark days and in wet weather without dipped headlights turned on drives me mad. why do people drive with parking lights turned on, " parking lights " are called that for a reason!!

Thats is either fault, that can be repaired, or its a design fault with the car.
 
A lot of people don't put on lights in the dark or heavy rain.

Side lights or near useless on a lot of vehicles.

Also the amount of yolks with a missing bulb is unbeleivable.

Great campaign though makes a huge difference.
 
Equally, not using headlights during early morning sun can be dangerous, particularly if the sun is behind you, it makes it very difficult for oncoming cars to see you.
 
Obviously, it would reduce accidents and deaths. Why not just make it mandatory to have lights on? The whole fog light issue is just crazy, so many drivers have these switched on all the time during night-time driving.

sometimes I'm really wondering about what some people are getting upset about : having to have a driving licence, no drink and drive, pay road tax, car insurance, have your car checked and ncted, have your dip lights on ... whereabouts is "down here" you live, albania?
 
Haminka......I reckon Slkash was being tongue in cheek!!

Since Wollram told me how change the backlight, I've been motoring with my lights on!!

sam, believe me, i've heard plenty of crap including questioning of the need of having a driving licence or being sober /a certain TD saying some people drive better when slightly drunk?/ that somehow nothing can surprise me anymore ...
