Máire Geoghegan-Quinn - Unfair Appointment

Does anyone else think that the appointment of Máire Geoghan Quinn has been inequitable and discrimated against any males wanting the post?

Brian Cowen - “In reaching its decision, the Government has of course been mindful of the emphasis that President Barroso has placed on the importance of a balanced composition of the College of Commissioners, and in particular its gender balance.”

I read this as meaning that if a male and a female of equal qualifications applied for this job, the female would be favoured.

Just because a majority of other countries have already appointed males to the Commission, it does not justify a discrimatory appointment in Ireland.

Just more jobs for the political boys and girls, who in their right mind cares how they do it?

EU jobs have always been for failed domestic politicians anyway, that should be an even greater cause for concern. After her political career here ended in failure, was she not the only appointee to the court of auditors who was not qualified as an auditor?

She retired from politics in 1997. As far as I remember she did not seek re-election and so did not lose her seat.
I remember her as very capable and courageous (remember it was her who de-criminalised homosexuality) and I think she was a loss to Irish politics.

I have no connection with her what so ever.

Have to say I was a bit underwhelmed by her appointment. Isnt it an important job that we need a heavy hitter to do?? It often seems to me that we, as a country and political system, pay little heed to Europe though its influence is growing and growing.

In GAA parlance are we matching the minor too closely because we know the players, but leaving before the senior game where the real action is happening.

It may be a female versus male issue in Eurrope but in Ireland its a case of all things being equal give the Fianna Failer the job.
Those who are not with us are against us.

I agree with OP. Ex -FF justice minister, out of politics for 12 years not a squeak out of her during Lisbon campaign.

Could have had Pat Cox, to the fore of the campaign, serious experience in Europe but not FF background.

After all the debate over democracy, retaining commissioner etc we land yet another FF dud. So peed off...:(

No need to worry, FG and Labour will terminate her appointment as soon as they take power in January. ;)
