Hi,
No smeel unlike the other threads but a definite dampness on the back seat and in a triangle shape as it were with the tip facing the front of tyhe car. Rear seats rarely used and windowsa ll sealed up. Can see no dampness on ceiling either. Any ideas at all?

Perhaps some weird variation of a crop circle ;)

Try removeing the seat. it could be a leak in the boot that is leaking down under the seat and soaking up through it.
If this is the case you should find some rubber grommit under there - remove one and the water will flow out. Check your rear lenses for leaky seals and the boot seal.

I take it you don't have a sunroof?

Golf = roof aerial. Rubber seal corrodes and leaks. Water travels along aerial-cable and drips into roof-lining and from there onto seat.

The other possibility is the rear washer, but I think the tube runs through the sills (passenger side) until it gets to the hatch-back so if it leaked it would likely be into the foot-wells or the boot.

Guys, thanks so much. I have a rear tail light that is cracked and so perhaps the leak is coming from there as suggested. It is to be replaced prior to NCT later in month and will see if imporovement then. I get all the jokes re triangular bum etc and realise that I did not explain myself very well. Thanks again, M
