Its time to dump the Walkman ang get an iPod or MPS player. What shouldi I be looking for in a device? I want to transfer music from my CDs as well as download new stuff.

Please advise me. Thanks.

What is your budget and what features would you like e.g. video?

Prices are coming down and features going up all the time - like mobiles.

Ms Caveat got her first MP3 player recently, Philips GoGear (I think?!) - about €40 - 4meg memory, suits her fine - 1000 tracks or so.

I wouldn't say that "money is no object" but I could spend 150ish.

I just need it for music when I go walking.

It depends on what you are looking for in a player. Is it for using while jogging or sitting at a PC? Do you want quicker upload to the device or is it more for higher quality? I hate to say it but the smaller ipods do it for me for being small and having quick upload speeds but are expensive. There are a million and one mp3 players around on ebay. Just pick a memory capacity and hope for the best!! Sony have a few good ones. Like this one Sony NWZB143B 4GB USB Walkman for €40 ebay.

It's for walking. Quick upload sounds like an attractive feature too.

iPod, although everywhere, is not everyones cup of tea.

The thing I found irritating about them is the iTunes software takes over your PC/laptop and seems to slow it down a lot. Its also not as user friendly as some other brands, which are simply drag n drop and which act just like an external hard drive whn connected to your PC.

I went with a Archos for many years and have recently switched over to a Sony - top quality imho.

Just music/audio, none of the flashy stuff like video etc?

I've said this so many times now I may be accused of working for them, but honestly no connection. For basic, good, easy to use and lighter on the wallet you won't go wrong with the SANSA range. In fact I'd even say the SANSA Clip (think it's Clip plus now) will be perfect.

You'll need some form of library to store the music you upload from cd as you'll have to take the songs and convert them MP3 or whatever format. It's a doddle so don't worry.

With WINAMP (if you're a Windows user) you can do this and organise playlists (just collections of songs you like or along a theme if you end up getting really geeky about it).

Look for an MP3 player that is drag and drop, i.e. you just open the folder "My Music" select the songs you want and drag them over the the MP3 player (once connected) as if you were putting files onto a USB stick.

I'm an iPod guy myself, but have a SANSA Clip for the running and cycling. It is way better than the iPod shuffle and other smaller devices. It's simple and easy, has a radio too, has a specific option for audiobooks (it automatically "bookmarks" them so you don't lose your place if you listen to something else) and erm...it clips to your belt?

I agree about the Sansa. A great little device. So easy to add stuff by drag and drop
and pretty good value.

An absolute steal at your local Xtravision store... [broken link removed]

In fact, they seem to be offering pretty good value on a range of mp3 players at the moment. Since the OP is, eh, inexperienced in this area I'd have to recommend dropping into a shop and handling a couple of different models. Some of the very tiny ones can have quite fiddly controls and/or displays that are tricky to read in daylight (but not the Sansa, particularly).

Thanks. I just bought a SANSA CLIP in Xtra Vision.

I googled it after I read your comments and came up with this...

Related query - my experience to date has been just iPod / iPhone & iTunes. I've been quite iHappy with iThem.

But Daughter Ferguson is probably getting a for Christmas, which can play downloaded mp3s and videos.

Can people recommend good, legal download sites for mp3s and music videos? Like all online purchases I make, I'd like the big, well-known, reputable sites if I'm going to hand over my credit card details.

Thanks.
