Hi, has anyone on AAM got experience of closing a credit card account and then being asked to pay a 30 euro government duty fee?
Is this the norm?

It's perfectly normal but if you're changing to another card provider you should request a letter stating you've paid it so that you don't have to pay it a second time in respect of the new card.

Hi thedaras, yes this is a Goverment fee which is charged upon closing an account and on the 1st April. Just some advice as people sometimes close their accounts on the 1st thinking well i've got the full years use of it, and will just pay 40e this is not how it works. You will be charged twice if you close your card on the 1st April.

So I suppose the best time to close it is during March?.

She already has another card and has had for about 3 months.
Does this make a difference in terms of paying this duty?

Staples - While cost wise it doesn't make a difference, you get the full year out of the card by closing in March and avoid paying the stamp duty twice.

thedaras - Is the new account completely? Have you closed the original account, or is this just a new card on the original account?
