Subaru Forester - Opinions?

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a dog-mobile. Something that I can lug the dogs around in, and generally not worry too much about while still having fun driving it.

I've been looking at the Subaru Forester (99-01 vintage) and they seem like the car for the job. Specifically the 2.0 S-Turbo AWD.

Does anyone know about things that I should look out for ? I'll take a look at Scoobynet but I thought I'd ask here too.

Pros: Very reliable and very tough, good performance, not that many around with the exception of...

Cons: Standard issue for the gardaí
 
High fuel costs on thise cars cos of the boxer engine. also if getting turbo make sure no lag and that the car has not been thrashed by previous owners. but reliable to the hilt otherwise. i had a legacy once, had done 210k km's on it and still worked well, some minor elec things were not working on it but mechanically was sound.
 
High fuel cons is arguably because its a heavy car and not the most aerodynamic.

Supposedly loved by those who own them.

The poor man's range rover/merc estate.

Possibly better than either.
