DVD Player Problem?

We have a standard Black Diamond DVD player, a few years old, which has a habit of not accepting loading of some discs. We only use it for DVD rentals and it is a right pain having to go back to the shop when a DVD doesn't load.
Some discs load and others don't, sometimes a whirring noise can be heard and sometimes not. Confuses me why some work and some do not.
Could anyone suggest a solution and does anyone know if these are serviceable, for example cleaning the reader/laser? I know they are cheap to replace, but if it's a simple remedy then why replace?
Thanks.

Does it play new dvd's that you have purchased? Were the rental dvd's scratched to pieces?

No, the rental DVDs were all very recent releases and didn't appear damaged in any way. Generally don't buy DVDs, but some new ones from newspapers etc seem to play OK.

I had have two of those Black Diamond machines. Both lasted approximately two and a half years each. They just stop working after a while.

Usage was pretty heavy - around two hours per day.

Like nlgbbbblth said it is likely wear n tear

I'm guessing the lens is dirty/damaged with age and you will need to clean it or if that does not work buy a new dvd as i would think replacing it would cost more than buying a new player.Google lens cleaning dvd and choose some advice you trust. It amy be worth a try.good luck

I would recommend the Philips dvd player from Powercity DVP3310 (model) - it states on the box - 'plays everything' - and it literally does, will play any disc from store bought to self burned on PC and its only 44 euro :)

Yeah, thats the one I have, after the last one drove me demented only playing some discs or getting 'stuck' looping in menus.

Have not had a minutes trouble with it, best 44 euro I ever spent in Powercity.

Is the Philips region-free or easily hackable?

I've my Black Diamond about 6 years now and it's superb, plays all regions and dvrs etc, I'm not sure I've ever used a dvd lens cleaner in it.

I think we have same one, mines not recordable either so its a case of if you really need a recordable player?
