Hi,

just bought a 40" LCD Samsung with full HD. I only have SKY + and it's connected with a scart cable. The picture is very clear except in fast moving scenes when there is a ghost like appearence around the object. Do I need a HDMI connection to improve the signal and should I trade up to the SKY + HD box and get rid of this poor quality picture?

Sounds like a TV setup issue to me? Maybe something to do with some signal processing option you have enabled?

Is the Sky signal of good strength and quality? (services button)

Check that you have it in the correct scart socket on the TV, don't use the RGB socket..

I have seen the same on Father's tv.

setting up an LCD tv is no easy feat and one would need to know the exact model no and the make of the sky + box.

First off have you set the output on the sky box on RGB and is the input on the tv set to RGB? This is the best setting for any tv like yours.

To get you sorted properly go to avforums.com, sign up and someone else will have your tv and no doubt posted the BEST settings. Motion blurring is a fault on a lot of new LCD tv's and plasmas. Also dont sit too close.

good luck

Thanks for those replys,
I'll try the suggestions and let you know how I get on!

Your full HD TV will never look great on Standard Definition TV. It's needs a HD feed to look stunning.

but not as stunning.... we do not know if its a series 6 model. And the OP wont be able to connect HDMI to sky + unless its HD.

Thankyou for those replys.

My progress so far is that I have used a small connector that came with the TV which has a scart fitting on one end and a HDMI connector on the other to link the sky + box to the TV through the RGB socket, there is no other socket on this thin 6 series samsung tv.The signal is still not great.
Talking to other LCD TV owners,I fear the only way to achieve the maximun picture is to sign up to the sky + HD box.

To disagree somewhat - Samsung Series 6 renders SD content excellently.

My sister has that TV and I find SD content looks, at best, mediocre. She has Sky HD and that looks fantastic. HD Ready sets perform better with SD material than Full HD sets do. I personally find Plasma TV's handle SD material better but that's for another thread.

She may mess with the settings and calibrate it correctly then. I have standard Sky and the picture quality is excellent (even after being pushed though long cables).

Edit: Samsung Series 6 is noted for it's rendering of SD content.

Fair enough and it's good that you enjoy it. If and when you venture into the world of HD, however, you will find that SD looks disappointing. Not even the legendary Pioneer Kuro can make SD look well.

I dunno, I prefer content quality to image quality. SD is good enough for me.

My eyes are still blurred after trying to watch the Liverpool game on the TV last night. I'm going to upgrade to the SKY HD + box and I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks for all your help so far,

Don't know much about this but we just got a new HDReady tv and we're getting a guy to upgrade our skybox. Does our monthly sky subscription increase with this upgrade also.

Yep...by almost €15 a month.

As others have said, the SD picture is fine on older tvs, but does show up on LCDs, especially the larger screens. You will get some pixilation and some blurring depending on the channel and broadcast. For example, the picture from the BBC seems to be ok even in SD.

Upgrading to HD is a matter of choice. Costs have come down, but it is still pricy for the few channels that are available. Obviously as time goes on there will be more, but at that stage prices are likely to have come down also.

I find the SD stuff pretty ok on an LCD, not perfect and the picture is definitely better with SD on the older TV. However, I chose to just go for the bluray player and enjoy HD movies.

I've seen HD TV content and yes it is better and seeing some of the BBC Life documentaries in HD is amazing, but I can live without Eastenders or the Simpsons in HD. The HD movie experience though is something else.

I can even put up with a bit of blurring on the sports with SD. Having seen the HD stuff it is a lot clearer, but it's still the same game. And comming from an era of "watching" football via teletex in a TV shop window, I can manage with some blurring on the ball.
