Watched the fight on saturday...I am always so impressed when I see Bernard Dunne being interviewed he just seems like such a gentleman in what should be the true sense of the word. Win or lose he is magnanimous but on saturday night when surely he must have been devastated personally he seemed more upset at having let people down and the country down ( at a time when the country needed a lift)! If you didnt see the interview you might not appreciate what he said...on paper it might not come across as well.. but he is so nice..and normal..what a guy!!

felt very sorry for him, its a tough racket considering all your preparation and indeed livelihood can be wrecked by a good punch from an opponent, and then its like snakes and ladders you are way back down the pecking order.

In most other codes you play tournaments or leagues and, on average, consistently compete at your level. If you lose a qtr or a semi you still get to play in the big tournament in 2 weeks time.

While I have sympathy for him and think he’s a really sincere and nice guy this was the first fight he was compelled to take, against opposition that wasn’t handpicked by his manager.

My brother used to be a boxer. He told me it's the loneliest place in the world when your inside the ring and when you're beaten, it's tough and quite humiliating too.

Well done to Mr Dunne for putting up a brave fight.

He got well and truly hammered. Dunne seems like a nice guy but that doesn't take away from the fact.
Dunne is a professional who is missing two important attributes. He can't punch and he can't take a punch. Talk about a glass jaw!!
I am just sorry I lost money on him as I had him to go down in the 6th.

He relies too much on showboating around the ring, he is not able to fight scrappy tough fights as shown in his two defeats over the last year or two.

One thing that stuck in my mind was after the fight one of the RTE panelists called him a "one of the really good Irish fighters". Basically implying he is not one of the greats.

I agree with you about the showboating.

I'd argue with the term "fighter". He is a good boxer but a terrible fighter.

Everyone knew he wasn't one of the greats but that just makes his achievement to get the title even greater.

As for not being able to win scrappy tough fights, did you not watch the fight where he won the title against Cordoba?

He was outclassed on the night as most people feared he would be. Hopefully he will walk off into the sunset now with his health intact.

Yeah I saw the Cordoba fight, that guy just falls over easily.

I didn't know if Dunne was one of the greats or not, I dont follow boxing that much. Dunne has done well, he has a great fan base behind him. Just a pity he fell short the other night.

How about the other Irish guy fighting the other night, the 6ft 9in heavy weight named Tyson Fury! Well, he has irish parents anyways. He is a giant!

I'd say his name was originally spelt "Furey", as in the Furey brothers. Jimmy McGee didnt want to get into the detail but they couldnt prove his dads nationality so he couldnt box for Ireland in the olympics - so I'm guessing they are/were travellers.

He's a real man mountain, seems a very nice chap too, and only 21, you'd never think it. Hope he can do the biz but according to the panellists he still has to learn his trade.

Also hope Lee & Duddy can bring something home, they're both a bit hot & cold but love watching Andy Lee, he's got great style about his boxing.

He was not compelled as said by Michael Carruth over the weekend.

Thought he was a mandatory challenger??, i.e. if you want to keep your title you have to fight him.

He was. He would of had to give up the title if he refused to fight. Apparantly his manager wanted him to give it up and go at it from a different angle (assume a different weight class). No-one wanted to fight this guy.

... Basically implying he is not one of the greats.
I agree. To be fair to him, like others, I've always believed he was in the wrong weight category and was constantly up against lads who were too heavy-handed for him.

IMHO, Ireland's current greatest boxer and maybe even our greatest ever all-round athlete is Katie Taylor. Thankfully women's boxing is now an Olympic sport, so she'll hopefully cap her career with an Olympic medal.

+1 and a nice person too if what I hear is correct!

Great athlete

Yes, Katie Taylor is a brilliant athlete. She is so strong and a great boxer from what I have seen. It is a bit early to be talking about the 2012 olympics but there is a great chance of her bringing home a gold medal.

She has won 4 european championships (in a row) and 2 world medals.

And just for fun she plays soccer for Ireland as well!

And to think that all Poonsawat got for his troubles was £12,000 plus a bonus of £4,000, rte and sky televised it, makes one wonder where all that money went ,plus a full house almost,no wonder many boxers wind up with nothing for their troubles

Hear, hear. I was very impressed with his off the cuff speech and the sincerity and emotion behind it. He seems a very honest guy. And I won't forget that day when he brought the title here and the Rugby team won the Grand Slam - a real glory day to be Irish. Fair play to him.
