False Billing

Hi,

I just received a bill for something I didn't order.

I find it hard to believe it was an accident (the company produce accountancy and billing software) so I am wondering if this is illegal and is there someone to report the company to?

If it is just me then it is probably a mistake but if there are others then it would seem the company should be punished for it.

I didn't pay it but if I was an accountant in an office rather than self employed it might have been paid without realising it was unjustified.

I haven't paid so it hasn't cost me anything but I do find the idea of it especially from a large company offensive.

Any idea about whether it is worth pursuing or should I just forget about it and simply never deal with the company again?

Vin

I gather you deal with the company. What makes you sure that it was not a mistake, something like miskeying a customer code when inputting a sales record for invoicing?

Have you contacted the company to get their side of the story? Someone obviously made a mistake so give them the chance to rectify it.

Are you sure it isn't a product that you need on a yearly basis that they will supply after payment?

mistakes happen. If it happened repeatedly i'd be concerned but just once? Call them.

To answer all the comments.

No it is not something I need yearly.
I purchased a software package and declined to buy customer support beyond the initial period that was bundled with the purchase, that period ended a long time before I received this bill.

I have contacted them to ask about it and they haven't responded.
That is the main reason I believe it is deliberate and not an accident.

If it was a mistake I would have expected a simply apology and would have thought no more about it.

Finally the reason I want to know if there is someone to report this too is because it is impossible for me to know if this is systematic since I am only a single customer but if there is a place to report it to I can leave that decision to them since they could tell if it was deliberate from the number of complaints they receive.

Since this appears to be a business to business issue it is not a "Consumer Issues and Rights" issue and has been moved to the "askaboutbusiness" forum.
