Hi!

Looking to buy the girlfriend a decent printer mainly for photos from her Fuji digital camera.Saw Hp photosmart C4580 for €71.99 in Argos..is it decent or could I pick up an Epson or Canon for similar or better price?Any good bargains out there at the moment?Harvey Norman even??Also, what type of photo paper should I get?Looking for good quality without costing a fortune!Cheers.

Printer is excellent, but some parts are easily broken if handled roughly.
Ink cartridges are expensive, and have short life. There is a larger cartridge with much longer life (350/xl black and 351/xl colour). These are better value although very expensive. I get non HP versions of these high capacity cartridges from ebay and they work very well at a fraction of the price.

Hi gulliver!

Is it the HP Photosmart printer thats excellent??Yeh,I hear that ink cartridges can be very expensive.Do any other models have cheaper alternatives?

Mine is actually the C4380 - almost identical, uses the same print mechanism, same cartridge. Differences are hardly noticable. Wireless capability is excellent. Print quality for photos excellent. Wide range of settings for different paper types. Scanning excellent. My previous printer was a Lexmark. Also excellent but lacked facilities such as borderless printing (current Lexmark models have it)

Local cartridge shop says they cannot refill the HP cartridges. is where I buy HP-Compatible cartridges labelled Printsafe - about €25 delivered price for 1 black high capacity, + 1 colour high capacity. Similar pair of items branded as HP cost over €80.

I've been through about 6 printers in the last 4 years. I'm now using the HP C4585 and am delighted with it. I was a Lexmark man for a long time.

The ink is expensive and runs out quick BUT the "fast draft" option is just as good quality as the "normal" option and makes the ink last twice as long. I also get cartridges refilled shaving 50% off the cost of the ink.

They are doing a sale on them at Dixons at the moment I believe.

Have an HP C5180. Its a network printer with scanner in the same device.
One thing I suggest you do before buying: check what drivers are available.
HP is renowned to only have drivers available for some OS. make sure they have drivers for windows7 in the works if you want to make sure your new printer will maintain compatibility.
The drivers that come with the C5180 are complete CRAP.

Thanks folks for the replies,
Been looking around the net and am getting the impression that HP cartridges are quite expensive and that Canon or Epson have cheaper cartridges.Am I wrong? The HP Photosmart c4580 looks decent but am wondering if Canon or Epson do a better photo printer under €100?The scanner/copier option is not important really, but quality photos would. Thanks

And check its memory too . i have a HP Colour Laserjet 2550 and it came with only 64mb RAM internal.
Photos could use a lot of memory .
I bought a stick of ram for mine on eBay .
Also this HP has moving cartridges , which means its capable of spilling some powder during use .
Some Canon printers have fixed cartridges ( they dont move during printing )

In other words - I would not personally recommend HP.

However you will find that replacement cartridges are expensive , whichever brand you decide on .

Shop around before deciding

Cheers,

Yeh,think I'll go for a Canon or Epson, there just seems to be so many of them, its hard to pick one!

Well folks,

Think I've decided on the Canon mp540,looks like a quality printer, got great reviews online especially about print quality.I can get it from Argos in Newry for about £87.97(just under €100),which is €40 cheaper than here in Dundalk. If anyone has one, feel free to advise because I'm hoping to pick it up tomorrow or Thursday. Thanks for all the help so far.
