JPeg to Thumbnail - XY ratio

I have a Jpeg photo which I have to reduce, so I used Easy Thumbnails to reduce size, one of the requirements is 'Size: at least 413 x 531 pixels (3.5 x 4.5 cm at 300 dpi) or more (within the same xy ratio)'

I can go into settings in Easy Thumbnails & put in 413 X 531 but when I create the thumbnail and try to upload it to the relevant intranet website I get the message 'Aspect ratio does not satisfy requirements!'

can anyone guide me on how to set the ratio?

thanks

I've uploaded hundreds of photos to various web-sites, having edited / cropped / resized them to suit my needs or the size requirements on the sites and I've never had to produce customised thumbnails. I've used Photoshop / Photoshop Elements / iPhoto / camera and printer software as well as site-specific editing & upload software.

Are you sure its not a specific requirement of the web-site that thumbnails have a particular ratio / size?

When you resize your picture, you must respect the original ratio.

e.g the original size is 200 x 500
if you increase 200 to 220 (that's +10%) then you must increase 500 to 550 (also +10%) otherwise you will distort the picture.

okay I wll go back and see what size original photo is and work on ratio's, thanks for the tip d2x2

if the original jpeg says dimensions of 3072 X 2304, how do I get the jpeg to a smaller jpeg of at least 413 x 531, can some one help me out with calculating the ratio? I really feel as if I'm missing an important (but easy) step, I'm nearly tearing my hair out!

I've also sent an email to the originating website for assistance, so hoping to hear from them as well

thanks

Hi Gloriosa,

There should be some box to be ticked or request to be confirmed in the editing process to "Maintain Aspect Ratio" - this is standard in the resampling (resizing) process of jpegs or any image file.

You need to set your photo (jpeg) width dimension in the software package as follows :

Current Width (the "x" ratio) is equal to 3072 pixels - Set this to 413.
The program will automatically set the Height (the "y" ratio) to the relevant pixels, in this case it is 310 at 300dpi.

Hope this works ;)

Just further clarification on this .

If you set the Height (the "y" value) to 531 pixels, the Width ( the "x" value) will be 708 pixels when Aspect Ratio is maintained.

Maintaining "Aspect Ratio" is essential to avoid distortion of the image as previously stated.

hi guys,

I went to my company's webmaster in the end and got them to do it, as I just could not resolve the issue, if you take a look at the following requirements as the most important, can anyone recommend some free software I could use as 'going forward' I will have to enter more jpegs to my relevant work site

*Size: at least 413 x 531 pixels (3.5 x 4.5 cm at 300 dpi) or more (within the same xy ratio)
*Format: JPG low or medium compression (high quality)
*Subject framed full face, front view, directly facing the camera, eyes open and clearly visible
*Subject centred from the left and right border
*Subjects face covering 70% to 80% of the photo (minimum face size 29 mm, maximum face size 36 mm)

thanks
