TV Scam

Dear all,

I really don’t know if I am on to the right place but I would really
appreciate any guidance that anyone can give me.

I recently bought a house and a guy that I work with told me he knew this
lad that could get tvs cheap. He said loads of people had got them before and it was all fine. I thought it was too good to be true but as well I didn't want to miss this bargain. Not having much money just after buying the house I thought it would be a great deal to snap up a plasma tv at a cheap price.

I handed over the money to the guy in work and he passed it on to the tv
guy. 5 months later, still no tvs. The tv guy wont answer his phone and the guy in work is not helping at all. He said that he can’t get in touch with him either.

Should the guy in work be somewhat responsible?

Should I just forget about it or what can I do?
Many thanks

Forget about it, your money's long gone.

I'd never give cash up front without receiving the goods first. I suppose you've learnt this the hard way.

Thanks for your replies.

I obviously knew the TVs weren't coming from Harvey Normans with a 5 year guarantee...! I knew it wasn't 100% legit. I'm just super ****ed at the guy from work who is doing nothing to help me.

A hard lesson to swallow

It's not always a scam or the theft of someone else's tv.

My fella knows a guy that takes things from companies that are returns. He then fixes them and sells them on.

We got a great bargin on a tv and a few other things, he has a place in Ashbourne.

He had 5 of the same tv's that we got, my fella took all five of them sold the other 4 to other people which meant we actualy got our tv for nothing.

Out tv is still working perfectly fine and i assume all the others are as they have never said anything about them not working!

Did he charge VAT on each of them and pass it onto Revenue?

He didn't need to, he only collected them for people and delivered them. Got all the money up front from them.

He just told them the price...which of course was more than he was paying. They still got a good deal on the tv's, the guy at the shop made money and i'm sure he pays all his tax and vat bills.

Call it a collection and delivery charge.

Good stuff - I'm glad he didn't pay VAT unnecessarily. Hopefully Revenue got the tax on the profit / additional income.
