I am looking to buy my first lcd/plasma tv,
This is priced at 699.00 in Power city and DID
I would appreciate opinions 37 " is as big as I want

Do yourself a favour and don't waste your money buying a tv from power city. I bought a tv there a few years ago and not long after the warranty had expired, the picture started going. The picture would go, but the sound would remain and i'd have to constantly turn the tv on and off to get the picture back. Adrian Kenny on FM104, had a load of similar stories on his radio show not long after i encountered my problem. Trust me, if your picture doesn't eventually go, then your volume probably will.

why would buying a specific TV from Power City be any different from anywhere else? If the problem is what that specific TV then it won't matter.

OP, google your specific TV "Philips 37PFL5604H reviews" and see what you get.

Philips have a good reputation. A good website is argos.co.uk. If you find they have your specific TV, they have buyer reviews on the product description page

It's certainly a good price for a 37". Has all the specs you would expect. Very hard, however, to find reviews on the net. Philips would be considered a safe bet in LCD technology, althought not quite as good as Panasonic, Sony and Samsung in my opinion.

Seems like a good price dodo. Here's a comparison to the Samsung 37" LCD-TV LE37B651

Similiar money - didn't read the spec in detail.

Looking at eggerb's link there's not much between them. I'd like to know what the image aspect ratio of the Philips is but other than that the Philips looks better value. I do think the Samsung TV's look beautiful but I am biased as I have two of them and have never had a problem with them (and I admire Samsung as a company).

We were in Curry's in Carrickmines yesterday and they had (not 100% sure of size) a 40inch plasma Samsung for 699e, the LED version was 1499...now the LED quality was sharper, but it's not like you were comparing absolute rubbish with brilliant, it looked like a good TV anyway. someone might have an opinion on it - I know there are those that don't like Plasma for some reason..LCD being better...and now LED even better...anyway the plasma didn't look half bad...we were tempted...but are waiting til we've more cash to spare...

The gurus over at AVforums are suggesting that the LED backlighting effect on some sets is a gimmick and is better left turned off!
I would consider Panasonic to be the best LCD manufacturer based on internet reviews (plus they consistently achieve the Which.co.uk coveted Best Buy award).

Not sure about Panasonic on LCD TV's but I have a 28" Panasonic Tube TV for 13yrs and has never missed a beat. I've been waiting a long time for it to go so I could justify replacing it with a flat screen

It's not the backlighting, it's the actual screen display is by LED (or OLED to be more precise).

I'd also avoid Philips personally, and go for Samsung. They're on a par with Sony but are more stylish and generally a bit cheaper.

Sony have the name but need to pull the finger out to regain the lead they had over their competitors in the past.

LG are also a good brand and slightly cheaper again.
Grundig are underrated and Panasonic are gimmicky IMO.

AVforums is a wealth of info.

Panasonic excel at Plasma's and if I was buying now I would aim to get a Panasonic, then Sony, then Toshiba then Samsung (in that order).
