The Revenue OMSP valuations are from the SIMI (what a joke - valuations have only reduced recently since SIMI members have begun importing directly themselves). You'd need very strong evidence to get them to use an alternative OMSP. It may be that you are being charged for what the Revenue regard as "extras", again using information supplied by the SIMI. "Extras" include leather interior, sound system (Bose, B&O, CD multi-changer) sat-nav, parking sensors, bi-xenon HIDs, tyre-pressure monitors, optional alloys, run-flat tyres, in fact anything not fitted to the Irish "poverty-spec" cars.... Also Revenue here seem to have priced the car very high, well over €30,000. Can I haggle with them over thier valuation.
Thinking of buying an Audi A6 2.0 tdi in UK. Advertised at £14,000 and garage have offered £800 off for straight deal. Is it reasonable or should I expect more?

I think before you automatically assume you'll get a better deal in the UK (excuse me if you're not!) you should shop around in Ireland. If the OMSP is 30k then the recession price is a LOT less so I wouldn't be disillusioned by Revenue's OMSP. It's never true due to the change in our economic climate. After the VRT is paid and the exchange rate is factored in you may find that it's just as cheap here.Thank you both. Any idea on what discount to expect to get for a straight deal in the UK. It depends on how you define "Irish" as SIMI members now import cars purchased 2nd hand in the UK... Also there are huge advantages with buying Irish cars ...
Most cars purchased from a dealer or privately in the UK come with a European-wide dealer / manufacturer's warranty that exceeds what Irish reseller's offer, but Irish resellers refuse to honour it. I'd love to know why.... 1) If you get a warranty it is easier to get the car fixed here assuming the UK garage has no ties with Irish ones. ...
I'm not sure what you mean by "most people" or how much in touch with the prices of cars you are, but mass imports from the UK have depressed the prices of 2nd hand cars in Ireland to the extent that "most people's" expectations as to the value of their 3 or 4 year old "Irish" car are totally unrealistic.... 2) Resale price. Many people are immediately put off by foreign imports. They think you paid far less in the UK for one than you would have here, which may be untrue. This translates into a lower selling price because many people wont be willing to pay you anywhere near the price of an Irish one ...
I disagree and a trawl through posts here and on boards.ie will confirm a range of problems with on-line car advertising / selling sites.... carzone.ie and autotrader.ie are probably the best places to look online ...
