Thought there was a thread done on this before but cant seem to find it, having lots of trouble with teenagers ringing mobiles. Just discover 80euros of very large bill was to their friends. How does one go about blocking our landline to mobiles and can this be done with any company. we are with imagine.

If your provider is Eircom they will be able to put a stop on this by blocking numbers starting in 0 this will prevent you in dialling national numbers starting in 0 also! However i tihnk there is also a machine you can buy which is attached to the phone and requires a password to dial out numbers starting in zero on the phone.

Eircom have an option where you can ring international numbers but block mobiles from being called. They charge you about 5 euro a month for this service. Any company should be able to do this, but I am not sure about Imagine

Depending on the model of 'phone you have, it may be possible to manually block certain prefix codes, effectively preventing outgoing calls to numbers beginning with 08* (and/or premium rate lines, prefixed by 15*). Check your 'phone manual before you pay your provider a monthly fee; it may even be cheaper to switch 'phone, if necessary. You can buy a twin DECT answerphone from about €30 nowadays; that's six months' worth of Eircom's call barring charge.

Only problem is that your teenagers are likely to suss what you've done, so hide the manual!

DrMoriarty - I've been paying the call barring charge for mobiles for years and never knew I could do this! Is this the case with all DECT phones? (I have Panasonic DECT phones).

It depends on the model, Kildrought. My own phone is a Panasonic KX-TGA711E — not a particularly new or 'fancy' model — and the option is there, under Base Unit Setup/Call options/Restricted calls. You could look yours up here if you've lost the manual.

You should also block calls to numbers with the prefix 00353 (i.e. the international code for Ireland) because you can get round mobile blocking by dialling them as international numbers.....!
