Safest cars?

I'm a bit bewildered with N-CAP safety ratings. The maximum score is 5 stars, and the majority of new cars appear to be achieving this in the last couple of years.
I want to change my car shortly, and after my friend being involved in a fatal road crash recently, (my friend's car hit another car and killed a woman- deceased was in the wrong) safety is a big priority! Is a 5 star Toyota Yaris, for example, equally as safe as a 5 star BMW 7 series? Are all small cars measured for safety in the same way as much larger cars? People say bigger cars are safer, but if so, why are very small cars scoring 5 stars, the same as larger cars? Also, apparently, the Nissan Qashqai scored one of the highest 5 star ratings. Does this mean there are points awarded as well as stars?
Just interested in people's opinions. I'd like a diesel hatchback, automatic or semi-automatic if possible.

Problem is that 5 stars is the maximum rating, so both cars are very safe but one is always going be safer than the other.

A small Toyota and a large bmw may have the same rating , but I know which side of that head on accident I would rather be in.

The op is talking about two modern 5* cars, not a old banger that wouldn't even get 1*.

the OP was confused about the value of what makes a 5* car a 5* car. This video shows why a 5* car is a 5*.

The old volvo is just the cannon fodder; I'm assuming the OP grasped that
