Looking for ideas to take herself with kids away at and around Xmas time to celebrate her 50th.

You don't mention a budget but one trip that wouldn't break the bank is to go to the Christmas Markets that are held across Europe in the run up to Christmas.
Ryanair flew to Karlsruhe Baden in Germany which is very close to Baden Baden. Friends of mine have gone there a few times over the last couple of years and love it. Book a nice hotel and enjoy the markets, the gluwein etc. Hopefully she will love it.

A rough indication of budget.interests would help.
How about a ski holiday?
If you are beginners I would highly recommend this little resort.
You fly to either Lyon Geneva (aer lingus) or Grenoble (RA) 2 1/2 hrs drive to resort.
The slopes are easy and quite. There are some funky little local restaurants near-by....Its gorgeous.
You can stay in the station itself in catered chalets which are pricey. or go self catering apartments (cheaper)
There is a lovely little village about 10 mins drive St Foy itself and a great little 2 star hotel with lovely ambience and food. There is a regular bus from outside to bring up and down to ski station.
I live nearby and know the area well. My 40-something in laws came with their teenagers here for a first time ski trip and LOVED it.

How old r the kids ? that might influence the destination a bit. Keep them happy = keep herself happy = keep u errr, happy .
I know that if herself were approaching the magical "50". ( a few years away yet,phew) the only place our 2 ( presently 23 AND 20 ) would be interested in at any time of the year is The Big Apple !
