Hi all,

I have a BMW 520i and I am wondering how often I am supposed to service it?

Advice appreciated.

Don't they have a service indicator on the bottom of the dash 4 lights that go out as the service gets closer.

I would say 10000 miles or one year should be a pretty good place to start.

Tale it to a dealer for a check up.
Most modern cars are chipped to tell you when it needs a service.
Older cars have strict service intervals and you [or previous owners] ignore these at your peril.
Failing that determine your model and buy a Haynes or other competent manual.
BMW's can last a lifetime if they;re looked after, but they, like any car, will suffer if neglected, particularly oil and filter changes.

You may find some back street mechanic who will do your servicing for a reasonable cheage.

my bmw 320d tells me when it needs a service. It flashes on the dash near the odometer. You can find out when the next service is due by querying the computer (google it to find out). Or give the key to a bmw garage, and they will tell you.

The computer in the BMW works out when the oil needs changing based on a number of parameters, I was talking to a BMW guy about it.
The parameters include
1. Average speed
2. Average journey length
3. Average fuel efficiency

My car requires an oil change about every 30000km based on my driving style, because my average journey is about 50km on the motorway, and I never drive over the speed limit (how boring am I). I never use the car for short journeys, I use the bike.
People who use their car for short journeys and who drive fast will need oil to be changed more often

BMW obc will tell you!
its an adaptive system which adopts to your driving style.

failing that, its every 10,000 miles or ebery year whatever comes first. but that varies car to car, my old evo i changed the oil and oil filter every 5-6k.

Not at all.
My car started telling me it needed a service in April last.
I delayed it because of the NCT and Holidays.
I always leave it until just before the NCT to service it if there's a service due.
Coudn't get the NCT until July.
Turns out that by reference to the mileage I would normally have had to do the service the previous August, but my sedate use of cruise control at every opportunity meant I added over six months to the interval.
And my driving syle meant there was no grief for me from the mechanic at service time - still got my sticker and the car is running smoothly.

And during that time I missed no meetings or appointments and arrived relaxed and smiling most of the time.
Cruise control - a Godsend.
