I employ a number of secondary school children at the weekends. As per the ERO for Retail Grocery the minimum wage rate was €6.56.

One of the staff in this category turned 18 last week. Does this mean that I am now obliged to increase her hourly rate to €7.49? The person in question works between 5 and 15 hours per week and has been with me for almost 9 months.

From Citizens information

"An employee who is in the first year of employment since the age of 18 is entitled to €6.92 per hour (80% of minimum wage.

An employee who is in the second year of employment since the date of first employment over the age of 18 is entitled to €7.79 per hour (90% of the minimum wage) "

The statory min wage of 8.65 does not apply to workers in retail/grocery. I suppose the question really is what is the min wage for a school going 18 year old who has 9 months part time work experience?

Apologies that table did not paste as planned....Min wage for Retail for an experienced adult worker is €9.36. Under 18's are entitled to €6.56. Job entrant rate is €7.49.
