My 11 year old son got his first mobile at the end of May this year. He tried to download ringtones and, in the process, unwittingly subscribed to what I believe is a scam from the company Jamster which is also known as Sybase. He requested one tone but got several at 2 Euros a pop for each text message. He clicked on an ad on metrolyrics.com which put him through to the Jamster website.

I knew enough about this fraud to text STOP to the last message but still they kept coming until his credit was cleaned out.

I contacted 02(his service provider) immediately they promised to unsubscribe him from this and sent a text confirming that he was unsubscribed on the 5th of June.

Last week he got 10 Euro credit from 02 as part of the phone purchase deal.Yesterday(Saturday) morning the texts started again. He has definitely not subscribed to the texts in the interim. He texted STOP several times but again to no avail. They only stopped when his credit ran dry.

I contacted 02(a nightmare in itself trying to get through to the operator). She said the company were called Sybase not jamster. I suspect they are the same company under a different guise. She said they would request from the company again that he be unsubscribed.

She gave me a number of the company to contact them directly. They can only be contacted Mon -Fri however. Which probabl;y explains why they sent all the texts to clear out his credit on Saturday morning.

Why is this fraud still going on? I`ve seen a thread on this forum on the ringtone scam from 2005 so it`s going on for a long time.

According to a 2005 email from comreg on this topic texting STOP unsubscribes you. I can confirm that this does not work.

Back in 2005 comreg were "contemplating the implementation of a second age verification via text by asking the consumer to confirm their age." I can confirm in my son`s case that this did not happen.

Comreg have also stated in that email "Should an under-age child access the Ringtoneking / Jamster service, the policy of the company is to refund consumers without quibble"

I will contact the company asap to see if this happens.

I am interested to hear if anyone else out there is affected by this Jamster/Sybase scam.

Here's a link to that 2005 thread.

These guys are amazingly tenacious.

The usual experience seems to be that you'll receive a cash refund posted from Germany with no accompanying documentation or return address.
