Are SATA drives compatible with SAS Backplanes?

The title says it all, are SATA drives compatible with SAS Backplanes?

I would assume that you'd get back planes in different flavours, IDE, SCSI, SATA etc. I could be wrong.

My further research suggests that they are compatible, ie SAS downward compatable with SATA. See this Wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Attached_SCSI#Connectors . Other forums suggest not mixing SATA and SAS drives on the same (SAS) controller (channel ??) due to the differences in signaling voltages.
