I want to wash my car windows only, not the body. What do i use? wash up liquid harms the paint doesn't it? Ordinary car shampoo?

If its properly rinsed off after a few minutes then it should be fine, hasn't damaged mine so far anyway. Fair point though, use with caution if you decide to use it.
 
Make up a solution of warm water and white vinegar (egg-cup of vinegar / 1 litre of water).

Dampen a sponge, wipe the windows with it (do the insides first), squeegee off, polish off with scrunched up newspaper.

Lift the front and rear wiper blades and clean under them, then clean the blades.

Do not use car shampoo or washing-up liquid on car windows; they will leave streaks. All very cheap and environmentally friendly.

i use a soft brush and car shampoo to wash the car. (paintwork and glass.) i've never done any damage to it.

But if you haven't got car shampoo i wouldn't see any problem with using a little washing up liquid. just rinse it well afterwards.

woodbine: Any specific brand of shampoo? I saw a shampoo/wax in tesco, would that do
 
I second the Vinegar and newspaper route.

Comes up perfect.

I have no connection with vinegar makers or Independant News and Media!

any brand should do. i've used lots of different kinds (including plain old washing up liquid when i'm stuck) Just make sure the vehicle (whether paintwork or glass) is good and wet and then rinse it well when finished.
