Hi All,

I have a 2008 VW golf 1.4GT TSI 140HP

It needs a top up and I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of oil it takes. I know I could check the manual but wont have access to it until tonight.

Thanks

You'll need to look at the configuration document stuck to the floor beside the wheel-well in the boot or inside the cover of the maintenance schedule book.

Look for the 3-character code, something like "QG0", "QG2" or "QG1" in the list of codes. The first two are most likely on an Irish car, with the third (variable-length service intervals and long-life oil) being a possibility on UK cars. These codes in turn identify the manufacturer-approved oil spec (applies equally to Skoda, Seat, Audi, VW, Bugatti, etc.) Cross-reference this with the oil spec in the car's documentation.

I believe the relevant oil specs for petrol engines are "QG0", "QG2" - VW 502.00 and for "QG1" - VW 503.00, look for the VW 502.00 / VW 503.00 specification on the oil container.

IF you check the Halfords.com website and go to Car Maintenance tab, you then select Engine Oil & Additives, and you can put in your car model there and it will give you the oil needed for your car for top up or full service.

From what I can see, yours needs 5W30 or 5W40 fully synthetic.

Hope that helps.

That web-site is not correct for VW's as some of the oils they recommend are not compliant with the relevant VW standard.

From what I can see, one of those oils may be OK for a top-up, but neither is suitable for a full service on that specific car...

Unless you're trashing it, particularly from cold, it shouldn't need a top up between services.

Simplest thing to do to be sure is ring up your nearest Volkswagen service garage [Try MSL on Pottery Road] and ask them the question.

Hey have the car topped up with the correct oil now.

I haven't been trashing it - the TSI has a very very hard working engine - 140hp from a 1.4. According to VW the car can burn up to 1L of every 4,500km.

That is untrue.

These low-capacity, low-powered engines can use up to .5 litre / 10,000km from new until fully bedded in / run in. Its documented in the user manual.
