Help

I got a Samsung DVD Player/Recorder at the weekend. Its either a DVD sr270m OR dvd sr275m model

Im having problems tuning in the TV channels on the DVD machine so as to be able to record. I using the Auto Preset feature to try to get the tv channels tuned into the dvd recorder but the scanning isnt finding any channels, even with the auto-preset set to All to pick up digitial and analog and the frequency ranges set to the lowest minimal range and the highest maximum range

Im not a techie by any stretch of imagination so am probably doing something very stupid here but need help as drove myself demented with this last night... Please help

So, here is the deal

I have plugged in the DVD machine and i have connected the scart cable from the back of dvd machine to the back of the sky box. There is another scart cable going from back of the sky box to back of the tv. (TV is a LCD flat screen). The satelite dish cable is connecting into back of the tv

With this setup, I can play DVD's. Problem seems to arise when i try to setup dvd machine to record

The user gudes is telling me that 'Regardless of the type of connection chosen you must always connect the RF cable otherwise not picture will be visible on the screen when the DVD Recorder is switched off'. So i try to connect this cable

My 1st problem is that the cable that came with the dvd machine, they user guide says to 'remove the arierl or bnetwork niout cable from the television and conect this cable to the 75 aerial jack Ώ marked T on the rear of your DVD recorder

I did this

Next it says ' Plug the RF cable supplied into the TV jack on your dvd recorder' which i have done . This is a black coaxial cable 3c-2v 75 Ώ. I have done this

I then says ' Plug the other end of the RF cable into the connector previously
used for the aerial on the television'. I have tried to do this but it doesnt look like this cable will fit into the ariel slot on back of TV and i dont want to try to force it in case i damage ariel slot at back of TV

Do i need to connect this cable. Am i doing something wrong here. Should this cable fit or as it an LCD flat screen do i need another cable type and if so what type of cable do i need

Do i need to be running a scart cable from the back of the TV to the back of the DVD player. Im assuming not given that product didnt come with one but then again maybe i do need one and they just dont come with them

There is a 2nd scart connection place on the TV. The 1st one is taken by the scart cable going from TV to the Sky box. . Like i said i not techie so dont understand scarts and how all this works. I wish they would write these manuals for people who are not techie

At this stage i have mass of cables and wires and dont know what goes where or how to get this working. The TV itself is working ok and i can pick up the satelite channels and the normal channels.

What are the steps i need to take to be able to setup DVD recorder so that i will be able to record both on the spot recoridng and timer recording

PLEASE HELP.........:( Mrs Passport is not impressed that her sitting room looks like a bomb has hit it and her so called 'smart other half' is making such a meal of this

It’s hard to know where to start here! People with SKY feel free to correct me if I’m wrong anywhere as I only have NTL.

First of all, in relation to the RF cables: The end of the RF cable you are trying to connect to the TV from the DVD recorder should be exactly the same as the cable end you took from the TV and plugged into the DVD recorder. Is it?

Either way I think the main problem is as follows:

You are expecting to “tune in all the channels” on your DVD recorder. But there are no channels to tune in – this only happens if you have analogue NTL or an aerial for RTE etc.

“All the channels” are on your SKY box and only one channel comes through at any one time depending on what channel you select on your SKY box. So when you are watching SKY on your television I’m presuming the Scart cable has automatically selected “AV1” or “EXT1” on your television to display the output from the SKY box.

So if you want to record from SKY you have to do the following:

Look at the back of your DVD recorder – which Scart number is going to the SKY box? – i.e. “Scart 1” or “Scart 2” – If it is “Scart 1” – on your DVD recorder remote select ‘AV1’ or “Ext 1” (normally using a button called ‘input source’ or ‘AV’). If it is “Scart 2” select ‘AV2’ or ‘Ext 2’. This means your DVD recorder is now ‘looking’ at the signal being given to it from the SKY box.

Then you must select the channel you wish to record on your SKY box – the DVD recorder is simply going to record whatever channel you have selected on SKY.

So when you are setting the DVD recorder to record, in the menu it will ask you what channel number to record – and in your case this will always be ‘AV1’ or ‘EXT 1’. You will never be recording from “channel 1” or “channel 2” etc on your dvd recorder because you have no NTL or analogue feeding different channel signals into it.

So, in a nutshell – select AV1 on your DVD recorder and press record – then playback and see did it record the output from your sky box.

Your setup is not really ideal. If it was me I would get a SKY plus box and use that to record all within the SKY box and just use the DVD recorder as a player.

If I’ve got this all wrong I’m sure it won’t be long before someone corrects me!

If you're talking about tuning in your DVD player, then I assume you're trying to tune in the 'standard' analog channels from chorus/upc/ntl ?

If so, you need to connect the co-axial cable from the wall/socket to the DVD player, via the RF IN socket on the DVD player. You then need to run a second cable from the DVD player (RF OUT) to the TV - the same socket on the TV where the co-axial cable currently connects.

If you have an incompatability between cables and sockets, then you may need to get some new ones from somewhere like Power City. Co-axial cable normally terminate with a 'male' or a 'female' connector. Each cable has 2 ends, normally both 'male' or 'male/female'.

yep, i was working on the assumption that he doesn't have the standard channels from chorus/upc/ntl as he has got SKY.

But there are no channels to tune in – this only happens if you have analogue NTL or an aerial for RTE etc.
