Anyone able to give me advice on relocating to Limerick?

I'm relocating to Limerick after getting a job there, based in the city centre. I'm looking to rent a room in a shared house but I'm not sure where to look. I've been told that it's too easy to move to a not-so-nice area which can be dangerous to walk around, but I don't know where these areas are. Ideally I'd like to live within easy cycling distance of the city center, preferably not in a big estate and in an area where I can go for a walk in the evening. I'm used to a small seaside town so getting a bit of fresh air is important to me!
If anyone from Limerick can give me some advice on where the nicer areas are and, more importantly, where to avoid? Thanks!!

I'd say its the other way around and if you are looking to rent a room the dodgy areas don't generally have them on offer. Easy cycling would be corbally (mill road is nice), raheen (fairly built up) mungret is slightly further out from raheen and a good country city mix, castletroy/monaleen is nice.

Areas such as Ballinacurra Road, O'Connell Ave, South Circular Road, North Circular Road, Clancy Strand,Dooradoyle are all within cycling distance of the city. Nearly all the city centre areas area fine as most of the dodgy areas in Limk are in estates away from the centre. Like any city you take the usual precautions walking there late at night.

Had a bit of mental block until I saw Briannes post, I would say South Circular would suit if you are looking for a room and it is walking distance and good area with a nice choice of property (old/new).

try the ennis road, its near and pleanty of estates about , also a good place to look for accomodation is the free weekly paper, the limerick post, you can read it online which is great and they have loads of rooms etc adverised near the back pages.

also try google maps, locate oconnell street as a cntre point then see how far it is to any place that you may be interested in as a guide.

Hi there,
I wouldn't know Limerick that well and the taxi driver who took me to the Hospital brought me though some pretty rough estates...

Have a look at Daft but I'd imagine that most of the "shared" housing is in Dooradoyle or Raheen (newer estates). You will find plenty of shared apartments in the city centre.
As regards a nice place to walk, the river walk near the University is good. This passes through Corbally which I would second as a nice area to cycle or walk to the city centre from, but a nightmare to drive.
Limerick is ok, lived there on and off for years and never had a problem.

could you be anymore vague?

Dooradoyle is alright, up around Collins Bar is a quiet spot. The Forts and other such housing estates seem well looked after.

A lot of new housing estates over in Castletroy also.

He must of taken you on a scenic route if he went through any rough estates to get to the hospital.

Surely that depends on where the journey started?

Not really, most of the estates are very large, with exits in and out. You would need to come off the main roads and streets to access them, It wouldn'd be a short cut as far as I can see.
