Are many Dublin pubs closing due to the credit crunch?

Seen one or two shut and a sign over another saying support your local pub.

at €4.50 to €5 a pint, I don't think they are helping themselves in the current climate.

The thing is if a pub here charged say €3.80 a pint I would probably be in there a lot. Now however I often walk by as its a bit of a rip off at current prices. So my thoughts are drop your prices and you would be rammed with people.

Thoughts anyone? I'm sure their profit margin on a pint is huge and are in a position to drop the price to get more custom.

As someone who is used to paying NI prices for drink, I tend to agree with you.

I recently visited Dublin for a concert and was shocked to be paying €11.80 for 2 pints/bottles at night. This is absolutely shocking.

I have heard some recent news about a campaign being launched in RoI to set a max price for a pint of €5. Not sure if I heard right but was Bulmers/Magners behind it?

I still think this is too high.

Why does a Magners/Bulmers cost me €5 in Dublin yet I can buy it for £2 in parts of the North?

I recently had visitors from Dublin stay the weekend with us and they could not believe the price of food AND drink in NI. In fact when the fella ordered the 1st round he thought he had been undercharged and questioned the barman.

My sister in law was charged €4.50 for a soda and lime in a nightclub recently.

While yes, the price of beer/alcohol/soft drinks in this country are excessive compared to other countries I don't think that is the real reason for pubs closing.
I believe there is a culture shift going on within Irish society. People no longer see a night sitting in a pub consuming alcohol as a "good night out". People have more choice now with multiplex cinemas, coffee shops and leisure centres and its a good thing too.
I can't understand why anyone would lament the end of the pub or drinking culture in this country. Publicans milked us when times were good and tried to milk us when times were bad.

The more that close the better for society as a whole.

Well all bets are off if it's a nightclub - sure those feckers generally force you to hand in 'cloakroom' items at cost of anything up to €5 don't they?

God I hate nightclubs.

No pubs closing round our way as it happens - in fact two opened recently.

The 'Coast Inn' in Skerries closed last Friday - now that's a real sign of the times as back in the 80's and 90's they were queueing around the corner just to get into this pub!

Agreed that price of a pint is ridiculous especially in Dublin..

Really? That is a shame. Good memories!

I have noticed that alot of places are beginning to reduce their prices or run special offers which is a good thing.

Prices are high but mixers are a killer. I was in london and new york in the last few years. If you order 2 pints a vodka & coke and a vodka & 7up eg, here you feel the price of 6 drinks. Anywhere esle you pay for 4. the mixers are $3 plus here.

A pint of coke is 2 bottles in a pint glass. Its much less than a pint in voulme it costs way more than a pint of beer, there is no excise duty on minerals and they get money back on the small bottles....how are they so expensive???

Thats a real shame i used to go there a fair bit.

Agreed the price of drink is very expensive...which is why i'm almost tee-total :)

Was out at the 02 a few weeks ago, smirnoff ice and a bottle of bud was €14!! Couldn't believe it, shows how long it had been since i was out.

Last new years we were going to go out with a few friends but the price to get in to the pub and for a childminder plus what ever drinks would be, just wasn't worth it. So we stayed in and had a great night.

I dont think it's just prices in pubs i think in gerenal people just dont have the money when you factor in other costs as well.

Bulmers recently announced a 10% drop on the price of the large bottle only, interesting to see how many publicans will pass on the reduction

Some prices I experienced during the last 12 months.

Temple Bar pub, 1am: Guinness = 6.10 euro

Other Dublin pubs (Stag's Head, Grogan's Castle Inn) = 4.50/4.60 for Guinness.

In Derry = 1.00 stg for a pint of Ruddles County ale (= 1.20 euro approx)

Other ales = 1.49 stg (= under 2 euro)

Lager = 1.79 stg (= under 2.50 euro)
