Pat Kenny's last Late, Late

Of course they could use a chauffeur. They could probably but the hockey club but that's hardly the point. I'm sure the kids would like their father to do the runs and be around now and again.

And about the weekends away, or lack of them, many of us nowadays value time and quality of life as much as we do money. Maybe even more so.

Many people nowadays would love to have the choices that a good income gives one, lots of people would willingly sacrifice all the time they have now for a good job and less family time. Hence my comment of ivory towers. Incidentally I like Pat Kenny and wish him every success.

Why do people in RTE keep on referring to the Late Late Show as being the longest running chat show in the world?

Surely they realise that the Late Show, which is what the LLS is a copy off, is still running? They even changed presenter the same week as the Late Show. Are they that isolated from the rest of the world in RTE that they never heard of Jay Leno etc.?

Do you mean the Late Show with David Letterman?? Thats only being around since the 1990's I would have thought. Or do you mean the Tonight Show? If so, I would still give the title to the Late Late. The name and format of the Tonight show has changed numerous times over the years. The Late Late Show has had the same name and format since it started. (And people wonder why it has become dated!!)

My mistake - meant the Tonight Show - this is what the LLS is a copy off. Tonight Show started in 1957 which is before the LLS. Both Tonight Show and LLS show have had revamps, been shown on different days, format adjustments and had different hosts over the decades. As for the name - "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" and "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" cannot really be considered a name change.

After Johnny Carson of the Tonight Show retired and when Gay Byrne was still doing the LLS, the LLS had the distinction of being the world's longest running chat show still with its original host. That distinction was lost when Gaybo retired. Any subsequent RTE claim about the show being the world's longest-running is mere hubris, as the Tonight Show is still running (with only its second host).

Tonight show is on it's fourth or fifth host.
