Selling Cars - Dealers may pose as members of the Public

A bit of info to anyone trying to sell their car.

Had a call about my car for sale. Man saying he was buying it for his daughter and his son would collect it the next day, give it the once over and give me cash. Gave the details, etc, proceeded to be made an offer for way, way, less than it was worth. Said no, proceeded to argue with me for about 20 minutes as to why I should take the ridiculous offer. When saw that he was getting nowhere, said he needed to look for someone desperate for cash or leaving the country, I did not obviously need the money!

It would now appear that it was a small time dealer who had a customer, but no suitable car. Would have taken car, drove it a couple of miles, quick tidy up and hand over keys for an awful lot more.

I think it is awful that there are people out there intending to capitalise on other peoples misfortunes in the Recession.

Not actually looking for advice here - just a word of warning to anyone selling their car.

A car is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it. It was up to you to negotiate a better price and accept or refuse. A buyer is unlikely to offer you the asking price.

I see nothing wrong with someone bottom fishing. If there are people desperate for cash, then they would be delighted to get a buyer at any price.

no need to warn anybody, you have your car advertised for sale and your inviting people to buy it, dont get offended when they offer you lower than you have it advertised for, the car is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.

what happens if you can sell it and its up for sale for 6 months at the same price??

i just bought an 05 BMW 320d (new shape) and i went in and offered silly money for it, ended up getting it for 3,100 off the advertised price as cash is king at the moment.

This is the first time I have sold a car privately and I had no idea that dealers contacted people pretending to be members of the public, so I do think it might be worth making people aware of this fact.

It really makes no difference to me whether it is a dealer or not, at the end of the day, who cares if you get your sale. I am just making people aware that dealers may have better negotiation skills than the average joe and people selling should have their wits about them when dealing with people approaching them.

This guy knew what he was at and was actually quite pursuasive and was actually saying things about the car, ie the price new is x and the price from England is x, which I know are not true and and had I not known the trade value of my car, I could have lost out on a lot of money.

All of the evening herald ads let people know that it is a dealer rather than a member of the public selling the cars, I am just letting people know that may be the case with people looking to buy too, because I had no idea.

Would you consider rephrasing the title to something like "Dealers posing as members of the public when buying cars?"

Maybe it should just be moved into the selling cars thread already there as it relates to selling cars, but not sure how to do that
 
how do you know it was a dealer? did he tell you?

what car is it and have you got a link?
 
Sold - would you believe to another dealer- who called - this guy was more professional and said from the opening that he was a dealer and where he was from - so no problems and no messing about either - he knew I knew how much it was worth.

Another €2K onto the first guys offer (now we are in the real ball park)

Anyone selling a car - there is a shortage of good small used cars - (so I have been told) as people trade down.

So happy days - roll on new car.

Now my only questions are - petrol or diesel - and red or white?

it is. often happens other way around dealers selling as 'private'
All of the evening herald ads let people know that it is a dealer rather than a member of the public selling the cars, I am just letting people know that may be the case with people looking to buy too, because I had no idea.

in all small ads they should declare they are dealers usualy with letter B i.e business. Lots don't because they are trying to pretend to be private sellers. If you ring up and ask about the car for sale and they ask which one it is a pointer to dealer but if you just ask about the ford fiesta you won't know

Just got rid of a black, so dont want another black. There is a nice gun metal gray colour. White is the new black you know!

And yes, I am in Kildare , so maybe lilly white for me.

Am going to go for 1.4tsi petrol engine or 2.0ltr diesel.
 
The 2l diesel sounds good. Plenty of oomph! Best of luck with whatever. :)

Diesel is your best bet, better mileage for less.

White on cars is wrong, unless you have blue lights on top. Sliver is ok but is very common, dark navy is nice?
