Public Service: Life/Work Balance Day

I got an email from a friend of mine earlier today in a somewhat gloating manner where she told me she would be out of the office as she was going for a meal in Blackrock Castle being paid for by you and me (ie taxpayers) as part of what is know as in the Public Service as "work/life balance day".

Last year the public service paid for masseur to call to the office and provide massages to the staff.

Is it me or is the world gone crazy?

and her.......public servants do pay taxes as well. How does above us spend them is for the heads of the organisations.

Yes, she does pay tax. But her tax does not pay for my excursions. Not that any are had in these times of recession.

When the Public Service have an excursion we all pay for it. Even if they are to have an excursion why not have it on a day when they are not working? Sat/Sun maybe?

Why a double whammy of us paying for it and also less work from our Public Servants?

I suppose if it was taken from them there would be a strike called so this is the lesser of two evils.

Before this thread gets blown out of proportion altogether,

Work Life Balance means nothing to the majority of public and civil servants. They do not get a lunch paid for them, they are not brought away on a team building exercise, they do not have masseur's brought into the office. If it does happen its only for the small minority.

I agree. Every year we have a 'work life balance' day. Nothing is laid on, we just get emails about the importance of work life balance, eating properly etc. Would love to know what Department your friend works in.

Ok do you think that the email you got from your friend was a wind-up....work/life balance day in 2009 was back in February?!

And it passed me by this year, same as it does every year...thanks to my public service employer!

I concur. I also work in public service & we got an email reminding us to leave work on time.
