Hi all.

Worked for a company for 2.5 yrs. Was a director in the company with a minority shareholding = 20%.
As it was more than 15% was regarded by Revenue as being self-assessed for Income Tax.
Company accountant carried out all the Income Tax returns, accounts, etc, etc.
I was left go in December last (construction down-turn)
I've now received a document from Revenue;
- Reminder Notice
- Year of Assessment = 2008
- IT Prelim RMD
"Failure to pay the correct amount of Preliminary Tax means that the due date of payment of your full Income Tax liability for this year of assessment is 31st October 2008."

ANYWAY, heres the questions;
1) I thought 31st October 2009 is the due date for 2008?
2) this was for 2008, when I was employed by the company.
Should the company accountant take care of this?
3) OR - is this solely my responsibility? i.e. do I need to employ another accountant?

Thanks.

assumed you under paye/prsi. Could send back slip of paper at nil. Just reminder, automatic computer sending them out.

File a return yourself for 2008 including p30 before 31/10/09. Download form 11 or 12 from revenue site.

dont need accountant if that straightforward

cover letter to revenue you are no longer a director.

In error the Revenue sent out reminder notices to people for payment of preliminary tax for 2008 even though these people had already indicated that they had a nil liability. Was it really an error or did the revenue expect a tax take! Who was responsible for the error? What did it cost the state in paper, postage and labour? How come no one has been questioned on this? Did any heads roll? The preliminary tax payable for 2008 was due on 31 October 2008. The final tax bill is payable by 31 October 2009 - slightly later if filed and paid online.

Send back the payslip with nil in the boxes. The tax return still needs to be filed (form 11). Not always normal for the company accountant to file this return. Late or an erroneous submission could lead to interest and penalties. Cut the corners if you wish. If it goes wrong pay the penalty!
