Hey all looking for some advice. I'm looking to invest in a peugeot 307 cabriolet. Is it still better value to buy in the UK? All advice welcome!:)

Every car varies really. 99% of cars are cheaper in the UK but you need to take your VRT into consideration and VAT also if it is under six months old. You should look around on carzone.ie and check the Irish prices. Autotrader.co.uk is probably the best place to go for UK cars and revenue.ie to get your VRT quote.

Personally I rather buying in Ireland as;
1. No messing around with currency changing / getting ripped off by banks
2. Irish cars have a stronger resale value here
3. I'd rather keep my money in Ireland
4. Traveling is stressful and an added cost

It really does depend what you're going for. . . If there is a big price gap then of course UK is worth it, if not then I know I'd be buying here :p

Less like an investment and more like setting fire to your money in the back garden - at least the fire would keep you warm for a while.

If your interested in a higher spec car go UK. In general higher end models will have a higher spec and be more cared for. My car eg. 01 525i sport has Parking sensors, Double glazed windows(an M5 extra),individualized interior spec, full leather etc.

Work in car trade and that market is dead. We are not even going to push those models any more because the general feeling is that they died with the Celtic Tiger.

My next door neighbour just happens to be in the car trade too(a different marque to me) and gets to drive demo's home. She has had the same car since 2007 (cabriolet) from brand new because they cannot shift it even after discounting it.

The trade in value for Peugeots is poor too, I had a 307 last year(not cabrio) and did not get a great return on it, but it was an ok car.

So do you think that i would be able to get a good deal on that model in the Irish market due to the slow down?

theres very little hassle with popping up north, picking up a car and bringing it back. Its not question of whether its a good idea or not in general, its a case of whether the car model/year combo is cheaper in republic or in ni/uk. Wherever its cheapest would be a starting and end point and seeing as most dealersa buy cars in the uk its likelu to be the uk but not guaranteed

This is an excellent point. Once you look at the minute detail (ie the exact spec), then it can certainly work out. However if you are not that fussed then I think you may be better off sticking to an Irish car.

I've been told that diesels are good value to bring in as the VRT on them is not as punitive but I will qualify that by saying I have not researched this and am just going off a few anecdotes. A friend recently brought in a Passat from the north (2006) and reckons he saved 2k.
