Hi,

Am thinking of purchasing a digital slr camera - used to have a decent one about 10 years ago and traded it for pentax point and shoot camera which eventually died and I didn't find it good. Am thinking along the lines of Canon either 1000D of 450. Have looked up . If anyone has any recommendations of ease of use, price or best deals to be had I would be grateful.

You should research into pixmania before committing to buy from them. A lot of people have had problems.

Hi Smashbox,

Thanks for the tip off regarding pixmania - I will take it on board.

Hi Dr. Moriarty,

Thanks a mill for all the info and comparisons - makes life a little easier.

I bought my Sony N2 Digital Camera from Pixmania.ie and had no problems ........It was shipped from Paris .

You may only get the basic camera without extras , if that is what you add to cart , so wherever you buy , ensure you also receive the battery , , large GB card , carry case , charger etc

Hi allthedoyles,

Were you waiting long for your delivery from the time of order? Just wonder also if anything goes wrong with camera where do you go?

Many thanks

Well Angela , we have this Digital camera , 2 years now and never had a problem yet TW . Delivery was after around 15/20 days .

Of course , I understand your concerns regarding after sales service , and where do you go , if something goes wrong .

IMO , this is a big problem with buying on-line from any genuine website ............and it is a simple reason , why we refuse to make a large purchase on-line , especially electrical items , like laptops , tv's etc .

However, We had been recommended pixmania by a friend ,who had also bought a camera from them ,and luckily nothing went wrong with our digital camera .

Pixmania accept www.paypal.ie as a payment method , so you can be sure that you are safe , when using paypal .

I can't comment on Pixmania, but I'm a Nikon Fan. I have the Nikon D80 and i's brilliant. I bought it in London, when I was over there. Bought it in Jessop's, which was the cheapest in UK - and much cheaper than anywhere in ROI! You should check out the North.

panasonic lumix. not out too long, lot of good reviews. very user/family friendly with intelligent focusing . I chose that over the 450d. very happy with it. around the 600 mark.

That argos 450d is hard to pass up at the price though.

I bought a new Canon EOS 1000D on Ebay got it in 4 days and it cost €400, I paid by Paypal and checked all the reviews of the seller before I bought.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all the replies, this forum is great for researching stuff like this.

Many thanks

I'm a Canon digital SLR owner (30D), I had Canon film cameras and lenses before going digital so it made sense to stay with Canon for me but I would recommend that you go for the equivalent Nikon instead. There is not a huge difference but the Nikons seem to offer a little bit extra in features and seem to be a little more user friendly. I can highly recommend keaphoto.com who I have purchased from many times.

Hi Angela,

If you're flying to the UK soon, or know anyone who is going to, i'd suggest taking a look at Dixons Tax Free at many of the airports.

I've purchased two 450D's over the past 8 months (once for myself and the second time for a friend). Both times i picked them at the airport and having researched prices etc. online and around dublin they turned out to be cheaper hands down.

Although with the exchange rate as it is at the moment things may have leveled out. I got the last one for about €430.

i'd suggest giving them a ring and checking prices first.

Hi Angela
I use a Nikon D40. Great Pics, Lightweight & reasonable priced!
Ebay is where I got mine 30 % cheaper than here...

I used the 450d and have done for about a year. I would definitely recommend it. At the time I did research into getting a Nikon but have no regrets now. I got it off dabs.ie. I used in college and now use it in my job as a journalist and find it easy to use as well as reliable. I have travelled with it and it goes practically everywhere with me. I just bought the basic with 18-55 lens but got 75-300 lens and the 580 flash in NY after. For the price it is better than the 1000d taking into account the fact that I got cashback from canon as well it only ended up costing me 530euro and that was last October at the time it was in stores (Currys, PC World, camera shops etc) for over 800.

I've bought fom pixmania twice with no problems. First time being two years ago and only last week I bought my latest camera. Shipped from France and had it in my hands within 48hrs.

btw I bought a Nikon D3000. Very happy so far!
