Anyone agree I think the anthem is just rubbish such an irritating tune I think its a lot worse than Irelands Call which I know lots of people dont like either and I am not suggesting it should be the anthem either... Any thoughts?

Not as bad as that whining excuse for anthem that is Gawd Save the Queen!

Ours is poor too and past its sell by date. Irelands Call is total tripe. The Fields of Athenry is prob the best song that's sang at sporting occasions that would do the job

Stand in Croke Park for the national anthem at a rugby international and if you don't feel the hairs rising at the back of your neck .. you're dead inside ;) !

For GAA games, the klaxons and the whoops usually drown out the last few lines. Can't speak for soccer internationals.

I don't really have a problem with it.

Would probably prefer something sounding like Wagner TBH but I think our existing anthem is better than most I've heard.

Couldn't agree more, at the least the Irish anthem is like the majority of them and is about national pride. The UK one is all about saving ONE person :( and just drones on and on.

The scottish one isn't too bad as an anthem, Flower of Scotland. It started out as a regular song and sort of got adopted....a bit like Fields of Athenry might.

Go lassie Go would be a brilliant one for Scotland - uplifting, nostalgic, sentimental - everything!

From what I've seen, people often sing it in pubs at chucking out time in Glasgow and Edinburgh the way people sing Fields of Athenry here.

Scotland doesn't officially have a national anthem of it's own.

And, i disagree that it "isn't too bad". It's pacing is way too slow - like something to be played at a funeral.

Il Canto degli Italiani is a good one - plenty of opportunity to give it loads. As is La Marseillaise.

Can't access youtube links in work but the old USSR had a rocking national anthem.

You can check it on youtube or maybe you've seen the Hunt for the Red October.

How come GAA fans at major inter-county matches don't sing the end of the National Anthem like their soccer and rugby brethern? It's always annoyed me that a huge roar goes up during the final few lines. :(

Once our government has finally gotten us into bankruptcy we will get a different national anthem anyhow.

Depending on who bails us out it's going to be "La Marseillaise" or "Einigkeit, Recht und Freiheit" from the German.

I don't think the Germans are going to bail us out dublinTexas. They have enough problems of their own and will come to the rescue of Austria and Eastern European countries first.

BTW, the country is already bankrupt and what's keeping us going is a ponzi scheme which will eventually collapse.

I actually like the anthem.

Probobely because I used to love that part of big Gaelic games in croker. I used to watch the national anthem on RTE some nights as a youngster to try and recreate that exciting proud moment at matches.

Anyone remember the sketch by Billy Connolly on changing the National Anthem?

He remarked that when it came to the Olympics, God Save the Queen was just too slow and dirge-like, leading to slow march pasts and downtrodden athletes.

His suggestion? The Theme from the Archers - much more uplifting!!

As it happens, I like our anthem!

How many Irish people know the words of the anthem? How many understand it's meaning? I would say 30% maximum. It is a national disgrace. It should be made compulsory to teach it in primary schools. I find it embarrassing to see so few of us singing it before our major sporting events.

I'm not sure if it's compulsary to teach it in primary schools, Gebbel, but most certainly do. All my kids learned it there. By understanding it, do you mean the translation of it from Irish or do you mean the kind of song it is, i.e. an Irish rebel song? I think the message is a bit outdated, myself, but I don't have strong feelings about it.

On a slightly different track, I presume most AAM members have heard some variation (and there are hundreds) of the story of the Irish supporters at the USA '94 World Cup and the barman asking one Irish guy, "What's that song all you Irish guys sing at the end of each night, the one that ends with 'Shoving Connie around the green?' " :)
