Does anyone have a dog with Hip Dysplacia ? Can you advise me on a good joint supplement and how much excercise per day. At the moment he is walking 2 miles every evening with one short walk in the morning. He is also having Hyrdrotherapy. Very pampered pooch.

Hi Flahers...

Very pampered pooch.
I know this feeling... My mutt's better fed than I am, and guess who's the only member of the household who has health insurance???... Yep, the flipping hound!..

I've a friend who's a police dog handler, and she swears by 'Devil's Claw tablets', available in a health food store... Kept a dog of hers working for several years beyond the anticipated retiremant date... It was thought that he'd have to be medically retired...

Might be worth a try...

Hope the pooch is doing well... A Samoyed eh???... How in the name of God do you manage his coat???... Must be a full time job!...

Darth...

Couldn't resist replying to this ... I too have a Samoyed, and you'd be surprised how little work it takes to maintain her coat. I did think I'd spend my days grooming her, but have found that even one good brushing a week keeps her coat in good shape. Unless she's blowing her coat, which she does twice a year. That takes a bit more effort. Plus she's a self-cleaning dog :p Dirt just seems to fall off her. I think it has something to do with the double-coat that Samoyeds have.

Great to talk to someone who owns a Samoyed, agree with all you said, people are amazed at how clean he is, we get him groomed twice a year and he walks on the curragh every day, comes home full of muck and is clean again within a few hours. Such an affectionate dog too, he's loved to bits.

Must try the devils claw, saves paying huge money for supplements to vet every month.

We have a Samoyed too and people just can't believe that he takes very little bathing etc. He can be covered in muck from head to toe and be snowy white again the next morning!

Ours is still a pup so no advice for you on the walking etc. but hope the supplement helps out!

Flahers2, hope all goes well. I know that all large breeds are prone to Hip Dysplasia, but hopefully my little girl will manage to avoid developing it. Although do report back on how the Devil's Claw works, as it may prove useful to others.

Rosiemc, congrats on your Samoyed pup! They really are the most loveable - and loving - dogs.

Our Samoyed has bad arthritoes (sp?) and we were told to give her Cod liver oil and it really does seem to help her.
