Chocolate chip cookies

I baked chocolate chip cookies and chocolate brownies with the kids at the weekend. The brownies turned out great but the cookies didn’t. They looked good coming out of the oven but they kind of collapsed, like they were deflating, as they cooled.
Have any AAMer’s any ideas why this happened?

You are rubbish at cooking perhaps ??

Explain collapsed ? was it under cooked or crumbled or something else.

How dare you! (Insert smilie for puffed-up indignation) I will place you on my ignore list (as if you'd care).... oh no, wait, that's what other posters say to me... you may be right but I hope not since I do all the cooking in our house.

Collapsed; were buiscuit shaped (round and raised up) when they came out of the oven but then it was as if all the little bubbles inside burst and they ended up looking more like little piles of dog sick.

Maybe I should re-phrase the question- "How can I get my dog-sick-looking chocolate chip cookies to look more cookie-like?"

BTW, I used this recipe.

Have you tried using baking powder? Or instead of all purpose flour use bread flour.

Rachel Allen has a similar receipe in her Bake! series which seems easier based on just reading the one you used. Also check the baking soda you used - was it baking powder? Or bicarbonate of soda:eek:? As far as I am concerned, the trick with baking cookies is to make sure they are quite flat going into the oven (i.e. they are biscuit shaped) and to leave them alone while cooling. I find that if you go poking at them when they're just out of the oven, they crumble into almost nothing.

By the way, I made cookies at the weekend too, a combination of chocolate chip and oatmeal and raisin. They turned out great! I'm actually enjoying one now with a coffee:p:D

I would presume (from past baking mistakes) that your oven temperature was not quite hot enough when you put the cookies into the oven. If you heat up the oven for at least half an hour before you put the cookies in then the bubble problem should be solved! Happy baking.

when i do cookies I always put them in the freezer for an hour before baking and they come out lovely

To avoid further failures in the chocolate chip cookie department...

(1) Make mixture with kids. Arrange on baking tray. Put in oven.
(2) Entice kids to watch their favourite DVD whilst you slip down the shops.
(3) Buy a packet of REAL chocolate chip cookies.
(4) Once home chuck the crap on the baking tray.
(5) Briefly microwave the shop-bought cookies (remembering to unwrap them first) and quickly tip them onto baking tray.
(6) Summon kids to wonder at your culinary prowess.

Now that's how real Daddies bake! ;)

Note: Small kids should not be left alone for extended periods unless left with a box of matches or some such thing to keep them amused.

Bursting bubbles - mixture too aerated maybe?

Either way, IME 'slow baking' cookies in a moderate/cool oven is nearly always a better method regardless of what the recipe says.

Instead of being bothered by the less than perfect results, why not mix the crumbled deflated cookies with ice-cream.....mmmmm, cookies and icecream.....!

When I was a kid, as my elder sister mixed the ingredients together, my younger brother and I would fight over who could wash the bowl - so we could "clean" it by rubbing our index finger all around (and then licking it) before sinking the bowl into sudsy warm water. Yummie yummie :D

Possibly you removed them from the baking tray before they cooled? unlike most other baked goods biscuits should be cooled on the tray they are cooked on.

Like it :)

Ancutza - you're deadly. And so early in the morning as well. Just back from the grocery store and am enjoying one right now. ;)

One gets the bowl to 'clean', one gets the spoon, alternating each time I bake. I should be in the U.N.
