I have 14 months to run on my passport which is nearly 9 years old. I am traveling to the states in May - will the US customs have any issue with it? It has a barcode!!

It's once is has the :

Bit on the last page.

You also need to apply for travel authorisation before you fly.
Use the US Embassy site. [broken link removed]

Olympian is this something new, that you need authorisation?

I flew to states last year and didn't need to do anything. Being in the EU automatically gives us 90 days to visit the US.

As long as you have at least 6 months remaining on your passport ( which you will ) then you should have no problems at all.

Have a good trip.

Glad i know that now. I'm going to US later on this year, wouldn't of been to impressed to get to America and not allowed in lol.

I'm sure that if you were booking tickets they would have something on the site saying about this new authorisation? If not i wonder how many people have been caught with that one.

Also surprised to see that it's free!! Thought it was another way of getting yet more money out of you.

Going to France in a week's time for a few days.

Passport expires April 12th.

Is that ok.

I found this on the passport website for all EU countries:

"There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the proposed period of your stay"

So you should be fine as long as you return on or before the 12th April.

Are you flying with ryanair? They will be fine, but i have heard of other airlines refusing boarding if the passport i less than 6 months old which is crazy if your going to another EU country.

olympian i want to thank you. i am off to the states next thursday and knew nothing about this new visa authorization thing as i booked the flights last year. thanks so much. if i didnt fill it in last nite i wouldnt be going anywher
cheers

It's not so much new as just a replacement for having to fill out the green forms in the aiport prior to immigration and this lasts for a couple of years.

That would be good, but unfortunately you still have to fill out the Green form for the forseeable future as well as doing it online via the ESTA process.

Concur with EvilDoctorK. As I've pointed out to many posters on these boards before even with the new ESTA system the standard waiver green form I-94w will need to be filled out for some considerable time at least.

The US Census Bureau rely on the I-94w forms as a source of information to calculate immigrant/tourist/visitor numbers. Due to a lack of foresight by the US Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) the ESTA system has been designed as a closed system and the information is currently not available to the US Census Bureau and will not be for some time.

Also please be aware that once the ESTA system is bedded in that the DHS will monetize it.

I cannot get on the "apply here" webpage for the ESTA application www.cbp.gov/esta for the past two days to apply for my mother's and aunt's visa waiver as the page has been down. They booked a flight with two days notice to see a terminally ill relative and I cannot get into the page despite repeated efforts. Any other mechanism there apart from the $49 sites that are not connected with the US gov.please?

I heard it was only being phased in and is not actually law yet, any confirmation that this is true (site says effective since 12 JAN 09 but I a friend got in in Feb without it). These are elderly passengers, I would love for them not to be denied entry either in Dublin or in US! Any suggestions / feedback appreceated ! thanks

Thanks Shark,

for some reason my PC did not allow me into the first link or your link either. But my cousin kindly tried on his and got it so my firewall is working too well clearly. Thank you for the tip though.
He got the job done this evening and the other good news is that the 72 hours advance application for ESTA prior to travel is not a requirement rather a preference, most applications update in a few seconds but they allow for all contingencies by advising this lead in time. This per the US embassy website on ESTA FAQ.
