On Morning Ireland today Aine Lawlor asked Fine Gael's Phil Hogan would he be taking a 10% cut in salary. His reply was "no". My personal circumstances doesn't make this possible at the moment!!

The rest of us don't have a choice, Mr. Hogan!!!

Yeah, it was a really silly thing to say...particualarly as Willie O'dea followed him by saying that he would take a further cut is his TD's salary..

He may be personally giving financial aid to some of those people who received passports at his behest.;)

In fairness to him it shouldn't be his decision. Declarations of voluntary pay cuts are just a smokescreen. It's up to givernment to impose an actual cut and don't give us this BS that they're powerless to pay themselves anything other than what is recommended by some commission they set up themselves

I was interested in Mr O'Dea's comments. He seemed to say he had taken a 10% cut in his ministerial salary already and if he was required to take a cut in his TD's salary he would.

1 man, 2 different salaries?

What a country....

So he gets 2 salaries for 1 job

And with all this Hogan reckons his "personal circumstances doesn't make this possible at the moment"
Holy Sh***! These are the people that EXPECT the rest of us to make sacrifices!

And if he manages to hold on where he is, he'll also have a Minister's pension in a few years, which he'll be able to draw down monthly while getting the other two salaries also. Yes, Grahamo, The Land of Milk and Honey!

I thought that Ministers had taken a full 10% pay cut but Willie put us in the picture. It's only on the ministerial allowance. I did think that Phil Hogan's comment was a strange one certainly. I'd love to see him try to row back on that if they get into power and they heap more pain on low income earners. DerKaiser makes a good point, though, about the smoke screen.

Does anyone know what a Minister currently earns? (TD pay, Minister's pay. allowances for both, expenses etc) What do they actually earn per year and pay tax on?

How does the pension thing work? As I understand it, they're entitled to a pension after a low number of years - a pension like any other public sector worker gets but only after a lifetime in the job? Can salaries and pensions run concurrently?
