Using Gmail as POP mail on MS Outlook - can't get this to work properly

I am using MS Outlook 2003 as my email client for Gmail (I want to do a clean up of old emails and find this easier on MS OUtlook than on the web client).

I can download all my email no prob to Outlook.

When I delete mail from Outlook, it does not disappear off Gmail on the web.

In fact, it gets pulled down onto outlook again.

If I delete off Gmail, it does not disappear off the Outlook.

So, not much use.

What am I doing wrong?
 
Not using 2003 myself, but on the latest version there is an option in the account properties to leave a copy of the mail on the server. Maybe thats the problem?
 
If you are using POP then, in Gmail:
1. Enable POP for all mail.
2. When messages are accessed with POP: delete Gmail's copy.
In Outlook, make sure it is configured to delete messages from server after it downloads the message.

You'd be better off using IMAP, if you want both Gmail and Outlook to always have the same view of your mail.
 
i tried doing the same (gmail is a bi*** to "sort by").
I have an empty outlook inbox but i can send mail. Gmail has plenty in the inbox.

IMAP??

I'd agree IMAP is far superior and would suit you if want use both web browser and outlook from time to time.
 
Yep IMAP is the way to go.
It syncs with all devices at once.
Eg I have outlook on my phone / PDA / Laptop and sometimes I use the web client.
If I read a mail on one system it's read on all, very handy when you need mobile access to mails
 
OK, so I am going to remove the POP account off Outlook.

Then delete all mails in outlook (to avoid duplication).

Then switch on IMAP on Gmail.

Then set up an IMAP account on OUtlook.

Does that make sense?

Do send and receive.

Then when all is downloaded, I can use Gmail or Outlook or both, and it'll all keep in synch?

Anything in particular I need to watch out for.
