Hi all,

My Dell PC has slowed down alarmingly in the last week or so, slow to log on the net and now very slow to use all other applications. I ran a broadband test and it appears it's running to the 1mb I have with BT, any explanations and solutions to my problem.

mine is the same.i put it down to the bad weather conditions.have to tried a c disc scan and D scan to free up space.uninstalling any new programmes.

How slow is slow?

Have you checked the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete and hit Task Manager button)? Anything hogging CPU or doing lots of I/O? Do you have a virus checker installed?

Do you have many applications starting at startup time?

If so you may want to disable them from starting up.
One way of doing this is as listed below. However please be careful of which apps you switch off.

- Select "Start" "Run"
- Type in msconfig and return
- Select the "Startup" tab.
- You will notice a list of programs. De-select the ones you don't want to run at startup time.
- Apply, Save and Restart

Then check if you still have the slowdown problem.

Of course it all depends on how many programs you have installed/running, available memory etc.

Try to unplugged the ethernet cable from you computer and see it is will be faster.
If faster then run a virus scan, you computer may be infected by virus.

If there is no difference, press "ctrl + shift and Esc" to get you the task manager.
Once the Task manager pops Up, click on process and see if there is a task consuming CPU. If there is a task that consume 99 CPU time to highlight that task and press on "end process"

Note down the task and post it here.

Try going to www.ccleaner.com and downloading the free version. I did it last week and it seemed to clear out a lot of `rubbish` which had taken up residence in my p.c.

Wellness.....I followed your steps as I've been having problems with my Dell also...."system idle process" is showing up as 99 CPU (well jumps from 85 to 99). There is a list if about 45 processes....is that normal?

Don't know if it's related, but I kept getting "sysfader.iexplore.exe-app error". Kept popping up constantly yesterday (every few mins)....but no sign of it today???

Wanderer - I also followed your steps:
- Select "Start" "Run"

...problem is I don;t know what they are?? The list is made up of names like :
- igfxtray
- hkcmd
- igfzpers
- justhed
(just a few of them.....I'd happily type out the list if anyone can advise!!)

Don;t want to end up deleting something important

Go to a newsagent and get a computer magazine like PC Advisor or Personal Computer World. They always have free CDs/DVDs with useful software on them for checking on problems with your PC. Cost under a tenner usually.

I find uninstalling everything except the essential things you need is a good start. Most pople have loads of addon's installed, like skype, limewire, desktop search, indexing, AV daily scans, google toolbars etc.

Also how much time will you waste trying to sort it out. Why not get a PC specialist to sort it out.

re: sysfader error - if it occurs again go to IE Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab, uncheck 'Enable Page Transitions' under the 'Browsing' section. This may help.
It could be caused by an update of one of the programs like Adobe or Java OR it could just as easily be a virus of some sort.

Re: the startup items
Hint - under the list of startup items there is a column titled "Command". If you expand this out it should give you the path to the program. If it's something you dont recognize leave it alone.
If it's a program you have installed like Adobe or skype or Winamp etc. uncheck the box. This will just prevent it from starting when you boot the computer and prevent it from running all the time. You can always start those programs manually.
Go ahead and post the startup programs here if you have a problem.

The other thing you can do is download a program called Tweaknow PowerPack. You can get a 30 day eval from their website.
It has a few good tools such as a registry cleaner. Run this (the reg cleaner) several times and delete the the "Safe to Delete" items.

BTW i only have about 20 items in startup, of which about 6 are unchecked.
40 is a bit excessive. What have you been doing with that PC ???

I thought 45 seemed abit excessive, and thats why I mentioned it...will go thru them later today & see what happens. It's the ones I don't recognise that worry me:)

I ran CCleaner yesterday & that seemed to redmove LOADS of stuff & the PC is still working (TG)

Even better than CrapCleaner is Glary Utilities. Google it. Simpler to use and finds stuff that CCleaner doesn't. I use them both regularly and my machines are back up to (near) normal speed....

A virus and/or spyware are often causes of this. AVG (anti virus) and Adaware/spybot (spyware) are applications I have used in the past.

Do you have a direct download link. All I can find is a link that goes to a link that foes to a link etc.
