Buying a laptop

Hi

Want to buy a lap top and went to store to enquire. I was told I should get a product recovery disc and to make sure I get this when buying computer.

I mentioned this to sales rep and he told me these discs are not given anymore & one has to make one's own recovery disc.

I have had loads of opinions on this - I am utterly computer illiterate.

Do I need such a disc and are they generally provided?

with most laptops you won't receive a disk - as sales rep said you can create the recovery disk yourself with blank dvd. don't get so caught up with it - you'll probably never need it unless very unlucky. keep your antivirus up to date. but no harm creating the recover disks.

Edit : If you are interested in a budget laptop I would recommend the following as I have recommended it to a few mates that now have one - it's only €395 + delivery but don't be fooled by the price - has a great spec for the price and.....you can order the famous recovery dvd for an extra €12 if you don't feel up to making your own. Delivery about €20. (I have no association with laptopsdirect or any other computer shop!)

I've never bought a Laptop or desktop even cheap ones from outlet stores that didn't come with a physical disk. Personally I would always want the disk.

Sometimes on initial 1st boot up when the computer is turned on for the very first time, it can give you the option to create a recovery CD.

If the laptop does not come with this feature or does not come with the recovery CD, I would not buy it.

Reasons being that you can download WITH hassle another windows CD, but it does not have the specific drivers that you need for your laptop as each laptop has different hardware components. Also, how do you get the preloaded software that came with the laptop .... fact is, you dont.

Also, do you really want the hassle of surfing the web for a CD and then also going through the hassle of looking for the product ID ?

It is not worth the effort !

Bear in mind, everyone at some stage of their life has to reload a laptop !

Hi there,

Can anyone recommend where to go in the south to buy a laptop? I was told to look for 4 MB RAM and 320 GB Hard drive with at least 2.1 GHZ processor. Can you recommend a particular make/model from experience? The max to spend is €750

Any tips you can provide are much appreciated.

I have bought a HP laptop (2 years ago) and a desktop (2 months ago), from 2 separate 'bricks and mortar' IT chains and neither came with a disc.

In both cases there was software to create a recovery disc (need to use a DVD) on startup-and instuctions were included re. same.

Personally, it doesn't bother me having no disc included.

hi there,
what use are you planning to make of your new laptop?
for normal use (browsing email office etc.. no gaming) I would suggest to look for 2GB RAM (gigabytes, not megabytes) and 120+ GB hard drive. they are more than enough for the standard user. Netbooks (acer Aspire One, ASUS EEEPC etc) are quite versatile and at the moment are cheap too. I would get one of those, and with the saved money get an external LCD monitor and keyboard/mouse. The best prices are generally on the web. Laptopsdirect.ie had good prices. Alternatively, try on www.adverts.ie. Plenty of laptops/netbooks to go around there.
Hope this helps,
N

BTW: recovery CD/DVD is not a must to have but it might prove useful if you're not computer literate. However you can find windows XP and vista CDs frequently on ebay/adverts etc..
