A family member who has money invested over the years in various portfolios as well as shares is now talking about pulling out her money. I know with the serious states of the markets, it is very difficult to predict what is ahead but is this a wise thing to do at this time, or is she better of to go ahead and go for it?

its that type of action that signals a market bottom. i would say there is one last big leg down. i would hold on

I agree. Shes mad to sell those now.

Capitulation or what! market has been and still is in a bottoming process imho.

I have shares in the Asian Equity Market & the Asia Pacific with Eaglestarlife. I started the policy in Jan 2006 and to date have lost €12,000. I am extremely worried about this and I just think that I was shoved into purchasing these shares by the broker. Any advice?

I have been asking the same type of questions but the advice everyone seems to be giving is hold on. Do you need the money? can you afford to leave them for another 2 years at least? Apparently this is a good time to buy coz everything is cheap so sit tight and let them recoup and in a few years you may have done far better having bought shares at a low. I suppose the real question is leave them in if you can because the idea is to sell high and buy low. It's the buy low time now so you have to wait for them to recover. I see everywhere that we are going to be in recession till at least 2010. I wouldn't even consider withdrawing before then. I haven't a clue about these things but Im passing on what I have been told.

You haven't lost anything until you sell. 3 years is far too short a time frame to consider for any an equity investment imo, particularly the Asian market - at least 10 years is what you should be looking at.

and the following investment, what dya think? it's down a lot too. what happens if the companies you've bought shares in go bust??

I pay 50% into on both of these funds, what do you think with regards to the recent financial climate? could someone explain to me how these funds work

It very much depends on her age, income, risk appetite, current savings levels, current asset allocation etc. etc.

If she is overweight equities in her portfolio as most people are then might be wise to reduce the equity weighting somewhat and diversify into more defensive assets such as cash (Rabodirect being safest with AAA rating), gold and AAA rated government bonds.

Do not "go for it". We have done enough of that in recent years.
Diversify.
