Just been looking at Sardinia and it seems very nice. Would like to know what its like for holiday, was thinking of April or Summer.

Is it expensive ?
Is it very touristy - dont like very busy place that are overun and tacky
What are hotel prices and car hire like ?
What areas are quieter / better ?

Any other information or input appreciated. Thanks

We holidayed in Santa Theresa on the north tip of the Island a couple of years back and it was fabulous - lovely secluded beaches - great locals!
Quiet but had everything if you know what I mean - seemingly lots of Italians holiday there from the mainland.
About an hour from the airport if I remember correctly..

Best of Luck.

Went to Alghero last August. We left it late - so the main reason for considering it at first was that the flights were the cheapest we could find to somewhere hot.
(Ryanair fly to Alghero from Dublin.)
We opted to go for a hotel - which we have never done before (usually self catering). Agian main reason was there are 6 of us and the self catering available at the time seemed a bit cramped for that many. We booked through justsardinia.co.uk - they have plenty of choices all over Sardinia.
We didn't venture out of Alghero . Alghero is busy - but with mostly Italians as far as I could see. Not many Irish or English. (which suited us fine) It is not one of your boozed up yobs places - completly the opposite. Good restaurants. (you won't get any places with fry up breakfasts than God) - great clean beaches (busy) and hot. A bit too hot in Aug for my liking. April would be cooler and less crowded. Loads of old historic buildings and classy clothes shops.
If you go in summer make sure you get somewhere with air conditioning.

Thanks for replies, its beginning to sound good. I though it looked lovely and Ryanair flights look reasonable, sounds like my sort of place. Will investigage further.

was in alghero and olbia last september, flew into olbia and stayed one night there.its not great(industrial city).then went over to alghero and loved it.car hire is dear but is essential as the coastline is amazing with great beaches.alghero is a walled small city on the coast with large beach and didnt find it tacky at all.nice food there but some restuarants charge a service and sit down charge so you have to be wary .i didnt see much of the east coast but the west coast is amazing and well worth seeing.its not the cheapest place in the world but well worth a visit imo.

Been twice in the last 5 years to Alghero, Late May and early September - both times weather was variable - so April could be risky, but you may hit a heatwave. I think the peak season is July & August, so you'll find outside these times it's reasonably quiet.

The west coast is a bit like the west of ireland in parts, very natural. I have a friend who went to the south/south west and thought the beaches were like the carribean.

For a week, Alghero is a good base, alternatively you could hire a car from Alghero airport and meander around - the roads are very quiet.

Were in Alghero at end of Oct last, but it was too late in the season and the weather was poor. However, like other posters we liked the place alot and would recommend it, particularly at the start/end of summer season when its more pleasant. Stayed in CarlosV hotel which is around 10/15min walk to the centre and it was truly the 5 star hotel it claimed. We had a fantastic deal of 100€ for double room including breakfast. Breakfast was of banquet status, truly awesome! Wonderful facilities and staff.
