But sure she's entitled to it !

Just like Rody Molloy was entitled to his first-class flights.

If that's the cost of getting the calibre of TD we have, they're cheap at twice the cost :D

Re: what kind of country are we in- no shame

She did make the fair point that when she left Fianna Fail in the first place, she was not entitled to claim this allowance until after the next general election. I assume that means that the Wicklow Fianna Fail guy who resigned over medical cards is not entitled to claim it at this stage either.

She's not breaking any law or rules, although I agree, in the current climate, that she could have set an example and given it up voluntarily. (as I have a funny feeling she will end up doing once Cowan has asked her to give the issue some "mature reflection")

the apple doesnt fall far from tree!

sure her poor father couldnt afford to run his 3 houses on his modest TD's salary...

who votes for these people?

If we're going down this route...

Why did she leave FF? Did she disagree with their policies e.g. on Medical Cards for over 70's? No - the honourable thing to do at the time would have been to give up her seat and disappear into the woodwork.

As for her still being in the Dail, lets not forget her deal with RTE on court costs that kept her there - how much did that (indirectly) cost the tax payer? I suppose she was entitled to that too...

Re: what kind of country are we in- no shame

The existing rule(s) do not seem to properly cater for this situation. However, I must say I think it a very fair point that she had to function outside FF for 4 years without the allowance. The rule worked against her then; it works in her favour now. A little arbitrary certainly, but there is no logical reason why she should take a "heads you win, tails I lose" position.

I kind of agree if it wasn't for the fact that it was her own fault that she was working outside FF. If she is going to keep the allowance, the least that should be done is that every penny should be vouched for to see where it is been spent. Actually non-taxable, non vouched for expenses for all TD's should be looked at.

Re: what kind of country are we in- no shame

I think the whole point here is; did see incure these expenses? or was she claiming a perk at the tax payers expense? What employer will give expense with out receipts etc. Even the tax office will not allow this.
