hi, yesterday indicators went a bit mad in the passat, 2001 model. when i push the stalk up or down they start blinking fast, as if i have a blown bulb, which i dont. then they stop working altogether. if i move the stalk back to the off postion and then back up or down the same thing happens again. i dont think its a the fuse, any ideas?

This may be the fairly common problem of blocked plenum drains causing an overflow of water into the cabin.

Basically the drains for water off the windscreen get blocked, in heavy rain the channels fill up and overflow into the cabin via the ventilation system. The water often runs down the side of the passenger footwell which is where a lot of the relays are, causing shorts and corrosion.

My 99 Passat had this problem, the alarm went off randomly.

Are the carpets damp at all?

If there is no water in the footwells (check the rears as well) and there is no blown fuse, it may be either the switch in the steering column (unlikely) or the flasher unit itself (a little box in the indicator circuit).

I suggest you need an auto-electrician.

Happened in the girlfriends Seat Leon. Common problem across the vw range I'm afraid.

Main dealer will most likely suggest its the hazard switch relay. Very common problem.

My auto electrician established it was the indicator stalk though as slight movements on the stalk would replicate the problem. Best get a good auto electrician to check as you will be told by VW thats its the hazard relay but may not be as per my case.

Either way its not that expensive to fix.

To the best of my knowledge the only thing located under the passengers seat is the CCU (Convienience Control Unit) ~ controls the electric windows, mirriors etc the relays and the fuses are on the drivers side. The fuse panel can be located by opening the drivers door and removing the panel on the side of the dash. To access the relays you remove the fuse panel itself it held in place with a couple of torx screws.

Also the central locking and alarm. It's a fairly common problem with that model of car as the corrosion can go unnoticed for ages, plus road salt makes it even worse as the water evaporates. Now I'm very fastidious at making sure my drain channels are clear.

Not sure about the new model.

Hi

I have a Seat Leon 04 and I have a problem with the indicators. When I need to use the indicators they work as normal. But afterwards (and sometimes randomly) the clicking noise continues and speeds up. The indicator lights do not light up on the dashboard or on the exterior of the car. I've been told to check the relays but I have no idea where they are.

I have a fusebox on top of the battery under the hood and one at the end of the dashboard on the drivers side but can't see any relays there.

Does anyone know where the relays are? I don't want to start taking the car apart if someone knows.

Thanks in advance.

Don't bother checking relays its the hazard warning light switch which is also the flasher unit,a two in one jobbie. A simple and relatively inexpensive fix.

When it comes to electric, bring it to an auto electrician. I am good at mechanics and then had a go at fixing my electrics. its finding the problem that makes the hair grey!
