On the 7 am news on Radio 1 this morning, they said that Microsoft had told its customers to switch to another browser because of a security flaw affecting version 7.

I can't find anything on the Microsoft website about this. Has RTE been the victim of a prank?

Here it is :

The "quality" technology sites don't seem to making anywhere near the fuss rte/bbc are.

It's not Microsoft telling users to not use IE - it's 'internet experts'.

Internet Explorer Unsafe - Why is this not being publicised?

I read on Monday that internet explorer is unsafe as a browser and to switch, however no proper direction was given on how to set up new browser.
It's very serious for individuals and businesses who do online payments etc and yet there has being no warning.
Can anyone on AAM give any insight?

I use [broken link removed] without any problems.

All browers have flaws, this includes firefox and internet explorer, as internet explorer has 90% of the market whenever there is a new flaw which doesn't have a fix it is heavily reported in the media, they don't do the same for the other browsers even though they have as many problems!
Last night Microsoft released a patch to address the issue reported in the media this week, so if you update your computer you will be protected.
Most internet explorer flaws are taken advantage of only if you visit sites which have been compromised so normal usage on well known sites tends not to be unsafe.

For me to download firefox on my pc, I would be using internet explorer to do so. Do you know how you could get around this?

You'll still be able to download firefox and install it - just click on the link I gave you above.

It's not that serious. Media hype.

I dont think its in microsofts remit to say what browser to go for, its a bit like Ford saying their cars are unsafe to drive so we recommend volvo instead.

The 3 main alternative browsers are

Mozilla Firefox
Opera
chrome

Firefox is most widely used after IE, has the most plugins and addons, but the more you plugins you use the slower it gets but would generally be used by IT literate people over IE.

Opera I find is the most versatile with as you can login and get access to bookmarks, it has a mobile version which I find very handy on my phone.

Chrome is googles offering and is becoming more used as days go by. Its very fast, firefox faces a major challenge from it but faces some support issues.

You're as well to install all 3 and play around with them until you just naturally start opening one over the other over time. You may find as you navigate around some sites arent supported with certain browsers at which time youll revert to another. all sites seem to support IE, some bank sites dont support Mozilla/Opera but you may find they open in chrome as its based on safari (another browser).

Google for links for all 3 browsers and post back for help if required.
